I can't edit my photos in Photoshop CS5.

I'm not able to edit my photos from iPhoto in Photoshop CS5. I've already tried the Preferences and chosen Photoshop as my editing program. I can't even drag and drop the photos into Photoshop. I've even tried to email them to myself. No luck. All I can do is LOOK AT them in iPhoto! Help, I'm on a deadline!

Are you able to open and edit a photo outside of iPhoto with CS5? When you selected CS5 as the editor in iPhoto's preferences did you select the folder that holds CS5

or did you select the application:

Some have made the mistake of selecting the folder. Be sure you haven't.

The following are tips on using Photoshop from within iPhoto:

Using Photoshop CS3 (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.

(the PS screenshots are from CS3)

1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

3 - however, if you get the navigation window

that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:

s I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS/PSE without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in iPhoto". That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.

This way you get the best of both worlds.

Upon further examination I've discovered that entire folders of photos WILL NOT open at all. I tried your suggestion about opening in iPhoto to edit. Basically, the window goes black. You can see the photo, small, at the bottom but you CANNOT edit it. I've tried to open photos from different imports (later weeks) and these work. I have not done anything different to the ones that won't open. These are shots of my artwork taken on different days. Some open. Most don't. I haven't altered the files in ANY way. I'm lost.

Sounds like you have a damage library. Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

  1. delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
  2. delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
  3. reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Fix #2

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.

Select options #1, #2 and #6.

Fix #3

Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  1. Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  2. Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  3. Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
  4. In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  5. Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I UPGRADED my OS AND therefore my copy of iPhoto (I now have 11)

If you purchased the Snow Leopard upgrade disk and upgraded your system it would not have upgraded your iPhoto application. iPhoto would change only if you purchased a new Mac, if you purchased iLife 11 or updated iPhoto 11 via the App Store. Just upgrading the system would not have upgraded iPhoto.

I am having a very similar issue. I cannot open and edit in PS CS5, any of the photos I have added to iPhoto both on my iMac and MacBook Pro, since upgrading to iPhoto 11 (9.1.2) and CS5 (12.0.4). The further upgrade to 9.1.3 has not helped. Older photos added to iPhoto with earlier versions, both TIFF's and JPEG's, open with no problem. I get this message (image below), which is more than a little odd, since it is a TIFF I am trying to edit not a JPEG. This TIFF was converted from a DNG using Capture One V6 Pro. The same TIFF image opens with no issues in CS5, when opened from Finder not iPhoto. I reconverted the images from DNG's with the latest version of C1 (6.2), rebuilt my iPhoto library as per suggestions, deleted the troublesome images and reloaded. No improvement. This is a big issue for me, as if I am unable to solve it, I will have to move away from iPhoto, which I like as a photo library and I have some 25,000 images across thee libraries. I have not yet tried creating a new library with iPhoto Library Manager and just moving say one event (with non-loading TIFF's) into it. I am guessing that is the next thing to try. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Details of TIFF - size 103MB, 5212 x 3468 pixels, Camera Leica M9, regular 16 bit uncompressed TIFF.

If this was a conscious decision by Apple it is a truly appalling one. It will mean that all professional/semi professional photographers who use TIFF's like me, will stop using iPhoto as a library. I only ever use JPEG's to post on websites or if that is what a customer wants as a format. Even then I keep the TiFF and only convert at the last moment. What on earth could Apple have been thinking of. I will probably have to shift over from iPhoto to Media Pro from Phase One. Thanks for the heads up Terence, even if it is really bad news.

BTW it does not make any difference whether you are using iPhoto as a managed or referenced library. I just deleted some photos and deleted both from iPhoto and main trash. I made sure that all copies were deleted from Originals, Masters and Modified. I then reloaded them onto iPhoto but with the box Importing - Copy items to the iPhoto library un-ticked. They still will not export to PS to edit. I give up and will now go and download Media Pro.
