drives are not mounting to desktop on macbook pro.

External USB drives, SD cards and even DVD media is not mounting to desktop when connected.

This is a new problem for me and have not had this issue previously. I have successfully connected the same devices in the past.

They all show up in the disc utility as connected. I am unable to mount them from disc utility (this button is disabled) and they are not showing up in Finder either.

Please help!

In that case, I would do this:

  1. Go to "your home folder" > Library > Preferences
  2. There will be a file "com.apple.finder.plist". Rename that file to "com.apple.finder.backup.plist.backup"
  3. Open Terminal (in Applications > Utitlities)
  4. Type
    killall Finder
    and hit Enter
  5. If all went well you should be seeing your drives again. If not, you can always restore your old Finder preferences by trashing the "com.apple.finder.plist" file and renaming the "com.apple.finder.plist.backup" file to "com.apple.finder.plist" again.

Good luck!

Paul,

The short answer: yes there is, but it will - alas - take some hours of your time. Here are the steps:

  1. Backup everything!!!! Especially all files in your home folder
  2. Reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 (from the Snow Leopard Install Disk)
  3. Install all updates via Software Update

While doing these steps, make sure there's enough coffee ;-)

BUT, before doing this, I would first try this:

Open Terminal, type

chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/*

and hit Enter (don't forget the * at the end)

Hi Paul,

Sorry for the late answer. I live in Europe, so that's why I was asleep ;-)

Basically the command tells your computer to unhide everything on your Desktop, so if you don't have a Desktop, something is definitely wrong.

My guess is that there's something wrong with your account on that computer. You can check that by creating a new account in System Preferences (click on Accounts, click the lock in the bottom-left corner and then click the "+" button just above).

Then try mounting "some" media and see if it appears on the new user's Desktop. If not, I would highly recommend to reinstall Mac OS X.

Hi Jasper,

No problem, thanks for the reply.

I have just got off the phone with the Apple support centre and after 40 min of trying various things (a few that were mentioned in this discussion) they got me to 'repair disk permissions' through the disk utility. This appears to have fixed the issue and all drives are now mounting. They tried this as a last resort and had that not worked, they were going to suggest a reinstall of the OS.

Will keep an eye on things and hopefully all is ok.

Thanks for your assistance.

cheers

Paul
