iPhone 4 Home Button not working properly

Hi all,

My iPhone home button (round button at the bottom) has started "not responding correctly." Sometimes when I press the button it works as it should, but other times it takes at least 10 clicks before anything happens. I can hear the clicking sound that the button physically makes so I can't imagine that it's hardware related - but it sometimes doesn't want to do anything.

After searching Google and the forums it seems to be pointing towards a software issue? I upgraded the phone to the latest software 4.3 around 3 weeks ago.

Modern Firmware - 01.10.01

Any advice is much appreciated,

I've had my iPhone 4 for just over 1 year now. Last month I smashed the glass on the back of the phone. I took it to the apple store in Cambridge and they replaced the back for me for under £30, obviously I was relieved that I didn't have to spend more. Since having a new back on my iPhone I've noticed that my home button has slowly become unresponsive and today it has completely stopped working. I've spent the past 4 hours reading through this forum and none of the suggestions have worked. I simply cannot afford to replace my phone. Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK (preferably London or East Anglia) other than an apple store where I could get it fixed at a cheaper price as I don't dare attempt to fix it myself. For now I guess I'm just going to have to use the soft home button. Many thanks to anyone who can help me out.

This is happening to my wife's iPhone 4 and also intermittently to my 3GS. There are 16 pages of posts about this, and I see nothing in response from Apple support. This is CLEARLY a real issue, and given the number of products I purchase from Apple, I am horribly disappointed in the fact that there is no effort to communicate with the users of their products (who are very loyal to their brand) regarding this manufacturing defect and how they plan to resolve it. Even if the answer is: "there is something wrong with the way we designed the button and if you are not longer under warrenty, you are screwed" would be sufficient for me not to abandon their products. But some response is required.

like i said in another post... its time apple pause their chain of innovations for a while, and fix everything small and big in ther devices and softwares. apple products continue to be beautiful, spontaneous and feature rich, but they are lossing their integrity and solid structure.

"like" if u agree. i'm gonna report this post to apple through their feed back channel.

I found a solution ! 😀 it's never a software problem it's always a hardware problem ! if you have issues with tha central/home button you should try to push hard on the button and make circles on the button (I eard a "click") like that if you had a bad contact it should solve the problem 🙂 worrks perfectly for me !

I tought about that when I remembered about the problem with my mbp unibody trackpad cliker.

Hope it's gonna work for y'all 😉

Remember, put your finger on the button and push it hard during you're turning your finger around the button.

Hi guys,

I had the same problem. The solutions are simple:

1. Change your Thumb. That is, if you've been using right hand thumb, which most of us do, start using left hand thumb.

2. The home key hole in your iPhone screen protector must be properly aligned with the button. If it's not, you'll naturally be pressing it somewhat diagonally.

3. After we close an application, it's actually minimised, not closed. So, keep frequently checking by double clicking the home key. To close the minimised applications, keep your finger on one of then until you see red minus sign on them. Then touch the minus signs one by one to close them all. This will also increase your Internet and gamming speed.

And, always ask this community, or search the web, before being robbed by an expensive technician.

Hope it works!

Enjoy!

The issue is purely mechanical and can only be properly solved by replacing the Home Button.

I did mine yesterday...see my posts here:
