iPhone 4 Home Button not working properly

Hi all,

My iPhone home button (round button at the bottom) has started "not responding correctly." Sometimes when I press the button it works as it should, but other times it takes at least 10 clicks before anything happens. I can hear the clicking sound that the button physically makes so I can't imagine that it's hardware related - but it sometimes doesn't want to do anything.

After searching Google and the forums it seems to be pointing towards a software issue? I upgraded the phone to the latest software 4.3 around 3 weeks ago.

Modern Firmware - 01.10.01

Any advice is much appreciated,

mrdanang

I'm hoping I found a simple solution, but I'm not going to get over eager. Only time will tell. Since pressing on the back of the speaker enclosure always seems to help, I decided to layer two pieces of electrical tape on the inside, bottom center of the rear panel so it lines up perfectly with the speaker enclosure. The rear panel slid back on very snugly, but not so snug that the panel needs to bend to screw it back into place (it is glass after all, so we don't want it to bend). Immediately after closing it back up, the home button regained normal responsiveness. I tapped on it about 50 times in a row and it registered every time. I'm sure the tape will compress slightly, but I'm hoping it still retains enough pressure to keep the button working. I will provide updates around a week from now and if it's still working, then again at a month. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

so let me get this straight - you think this is an easy 39 dollar repair. Yet Apple, rather than repairing the phone, replaces them ! Wow - Apple needs to hire you to straighten out their business practices because that makes no sense !

And I find it interesting you are so opposed to modifications not authorized by Apple but having your phone serviced by someone other than Apple is what you are actually advising...

I've been having the same issue for a few months now and I really don't think it's a software issue.

If you turn your phone to landscape mode, you'll notice that your hands are exactly in front of the charging port - directly beneath the home button. There's a high chance that it's just dirt and moisture that's going through and somehow affecting the home button.

Try not using landscape for a while and see how it goes.

This has been talked about several times in this thread. There is no recalibrating the home button. This article is spreading false information. If this worked for you now, it is simply because you held the home button down for a long period of time with a decent amount of pressure. It has not fixed the problem for anyone in this thread. I has only made the button more responsive for small periods of time.

For those who are interested, my home button is still working perfectly after two days with the electrical tap on the inside bottom of the rear panel. I'm not getting my hopes up as it has only been two days, but so far it looks promising.

I just thought of sharing my experience. My iphone 4 home button was not working properly. In the beginning it took 3 clicks to respond but later I had to try 5 to 6 times before it does. I updated the firmware but the problem last. I tried many of the tips online but non of them worked for me. At the end the button itself was stuck inside and it didn't even click anymore. I took the phone to Apple store in covent garden and the people there were very understanding they gave me an apoointment right away as I don't live in London. And the genius employee who checked the iPhone replaced it for me for free and with no questions. So it took me 10 minutes to get a new phone. So I do recommend NOT to alter the device to avoid losing the warranty! And even if your warranty is expired still better not to stick anything into the device as you may break inner parts where then it'll cost you more money!

Cheers,

El

Anyone who has this issue whose phone is under warranty should definitely just get it replaced! I'm glad you had a good experience at the store. The problem is that most of us are out of warranty (unless one purchased AppleCare) as the phone first came out in the USA ~20 months ago. Please note that you don't have to go to an Apple Store to get your phone replaced under warranty. Apple has world class telephone technical support and is able to ship replacements to most any country in the world. They will walk you through the same things over the phone that the "Geniuses" try in the store. If they are unable to resolve the problem with you, they are more than happy to ship a replacement most anywhere in the world.

As far as this statement goes: "So I do recommend NOT to alter the device to avoid losing the warranty! And even if your warranty is expired still better not to stick anything into the device as you may break inner parts where then it'll cost you more money!" Those of us out of warrantly have absolutely nothing to lose. If we break it, we'll be paying Apple $200 for a replacement phone. If we take the phone with a manufunctioning home button to Apple, they'll tell us all they can do is replace the phone for $200. We are not out anything by trying to fix it ourselves. In any case, I assure you, placing electrical tape on the inside of the rear panel or cleaning the button with appropriate contact cleaner, will not break the phone. Even taking riskier actions, like replacing the home button, can't result in us being in any worse of a position than when we started.

I have the same home button menu and my phone is out of warranty. So I went to apple store to understand why the Iphone 4 was not working. So after the tech have remove my screen protective screen, scratch a metal pin in the open charging section like crazy, reset it ... He told me we can't fix it you need to buy a new one at 200$ which is a great deal! Wow is the Iphone 4 a 1 year of usage phone?? Because by reading all of you, the problem is massive. So now that mean apple do Phone that are not really ecologicale if we have to buy one every year. And don't think that because you got apple care on it and can get a new one for free that means your old phone is not pollution.
