iPhone 4 Home Button not working properly

Hi all,

My iPhone home button (round button at the bottom) has started "not responding correctly." Sometimes when I press the button it works as it should, but other times it takes at least 10 clicks before anything happens. I can hear the clicking sound that the button physically makes so I can't imagine that it's hardware related - but it sometimes doesn't want to do anything.

After searching Google and the forums it seems to be pointing towards a software issue? I upgraded the phone to the latest software 4.3 around 3 weeks ago.

Modern Firmware - 01.10.01

Any advice is much appreciated,

Thanks Ronald Langley for this fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXlY-VcxbCU&feature=youtu.be

Using the iPhone cable to push up on the underside of home button worked like a charm."

It may seem like fluff BUT IT REALLY WORKS! Watch the video and try it!

Thank you for the great tip with the power cable..... There is another "solution" though but it doesn't really address the Home button itself. It involves turning on the Accessibility feature. It's a foolproof if not slightly annoying workaround since it places a virtual home button on your screen which never really disappears (it does auto-dim itself though).

To place a Home button on your screen, go to :

  1. Settings
  2. General
  3. Accessibility
  4. Assistive Touch "On"

my iphone home button hasn't been working for around 3 weeks, although i'm insured they aren't interested as it's a 'software problem;I'm out of my year warranty and have tried all the tips on here and still it refuses to work 😟

I can only use one function at a time then i have to switch the phone off to do something else....it's very frustrating!!!!

I've been told that I can have it repaired at an estimated cost of £140 or take it to an apple shop 30+ miles away so they can have a look BUT i have to make an appointment??

This seems to be a commom problem but apple don't seemto be interested........ i was going to upgrade to the 4s but I'm not convinced its a good move......... grrrrrr

You guys are killing me. It's not a software thing, there has been about 4 software updates since this problem has started in the original posting for this issue.

The problem is our dirty nasty hands and fingers, I fixed my home button by CLEANING it. I used a little rubbing alcohol, it's harmless in moderation. Clean it, let it air dry for 5 minutes (god forbid, but your phone will be off for 5 minutes) and it will work. It's been about 5 months since I cleaned it and it works just fine. I just mind my hands when I use my phone. If I've been working on my car, or in the kitchen or whatever, I'll wash them. Never had an issue since. So clean your hands and your filthy iPhones once in a while. Gross....

Okay. I can't believe this worked. But I was looking at the port in the bottom of the phone. I noticed the connector board (?) for the data cable/charge. Looks like a Nintendo Cart. I took a page out of my childhood...

I blew on the port.

Put the whole thing in my mouth and blew slowly and firm. I noticed it was better, but skiiping a tiny bit.

I blew again.

It works like a charm now.

Who'd a thunk it?
