Three week old iPad2 locked with spinning wheel for last twelve hours. Unable to power off iPad no matter how long the power button is held. When connected to computer iTunes does not recognize the iPad and gives error 0xE8000065. Emptied the /var/db/lockdown folder and still unable to stop the spinning wheel. What next?

Have you tried a reset (as opposed to simply turning it off)?
Hold the on/off button and the Home button down simultaneously until it shuts down completely. Then turn it back on.

That worked although I did try this last night. Guess I did not hold both for long enough the first time.

Remember that procedure James gave you. It will help for many strange problems, if you encounter any more.
The hard reset only solves the problem temporarily. I think it is using up my battery. It mostly does it using Safari.
That's only a temporary solution.
It is only a temporary solution because the problem returns later.
