I am using, M-AUDIO, AV-40 speakers on my MacBook Pro. The volume control is on the left speaker.

On the AV-40 external speakers, the volume control is on the left speaker. I control my volume at the speaker. What is the proper volume setting on my computer? I have been setting my computer volume on high.

There are several settings to get the volume just right. There is an overall system volume controlled in System Preferences (or using icon in Menu Bar); there is usually another setting associated with an application such as iTunes, Garage Band or Logic. Then you have a setting for the speakers. It is up to your ears which combination is just right for your circumstances. I find it works best to have a medium high in System Preferences: system volume + medium high in the application + finer adjustments as needed on the speakers-- in my case I use Bose Computer Monitor. Each audio media (CD or DVD movie) also has an output which is not necessarily consistent from one to another. That is why the iPod gives you the option (Sound Check) to average out the audio. Ultimately it is your ears and surroundings which should determine the best setting.
