How do you get Netflix movies on Apple TV 2?

Folks:

Apple says in the very first sentence on the very first page of the first chapter of their of their Apple TV 2 "Setup Guide" that you can watch streaming content from Netflix and then NEVER MENTIONS NETFLIX AGAIN! How disingenuous is that?!? I tried at the iTunes Store and they'll sell you aps but they won't help you actually stream movies from Netflix.

Now I could go to Apple Support except that I received my Apple TV 2 as a present and so I don't have the purchase date (it is after the 90 days anyway even though I haven't hooked it up yet) so they just keep sending me into a never-ending FU loop. Right now I'm so angry that I don't think that I will ever buy another Apple product again. gonna be tough though since I have an iMac, an Airbook, an iPhone 4, an iPhone 3GS, two iPods, and TWO Airport Extremes... So here I am trying to see if you folks can help me out.

I think the easiest thing for you to do would be to get me a URL where someone has dealt with this issue and I'll take it from there.

Thanks in advance,

mnilan

It would appear the Apple assumes two things— 1) that you already have a Netflix account and 2) that you read the connection/setup instructions for various devices and/or mobile applications as detailed on the Netflix web site.

What is your problem or question? Install the ATV as per the simple instructions, Netflix is a menu choice under the Internet settings once you have the device set up and connected to the Internet. Of course you have to have a Netflix account, you can't expect it to be free? You also have to have Internet access, which also isn't up to Apple to provide for you.

Try installing the device and see if you can find how to access Netflix. It is a pretty cool addition to the new ATV.

Brian:

Thank you for your comments. I, of course do have a Netflix account and high speed Internet as well. What I DON'T have is any helpful information from Apple, which, I believe, IS up to Apple to provide for me. So your suggestion that I install the Apple TV is my only recourse at this time however, I generally prefer to know what I am doing before I dive in and possibly screw something up or go around in circles as Apple would seem to its customers do in this case.

By the iTunes Store, do you mean the app store? Are you somehow thinking that you need to download and install Netflix on the Apple TV? If this is the case, you can be comforted by the fact that the Netflix functionality is pre-installed on the Apple Tv and all that is necessary of you is to input your Netflix username and password into the Apple TV after clicking on the pre-existing "Netflix" button in the interface. I apologize for asking if you were a troll. I now see that you were just confused. Really, you should just try hooking the Apple TV up to your set. The setup instructions are obvious and spelled out in detail like most Apple products.

Hi,

I have recently bought an apple tv so that I can stream from my laptop or iphone to my television. I am trying to add netflix to my apple tv but I can't find out how. You mention the internet function on the apple tv but mine has not got this option on it. where would I find this? I would really appreciate assistance in this as the whole purpose in buying this is to stream films from netflix.

Somewhat confused by your question here. Have you already installed and set up your TV as described in the TV 3rd Generation Setup Manual? If so, and your main iTunes/Home Sharing computer platform is properly connected to the Internet, then your TV should already have an Internet connection via the wired or wireless network you used to set up the TV device. At this point it is merely a question of selecting the Netfix app in the bottom half of your main TV menu and signing in to your Netflix account to access Netflix content streamed via the Internet.

I don't have tv firmware update under the settings menu and I have been to the set manual I have tried youtube and I can't find the solution anywhere. Surely there must be some way to add things like netflix or lovefilm on this.

Okay, lets start at the beginning...

After setting up the TV device and turning on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer, do you see an opening screen something like this on your HDTV?

If so, you should be able to see a portion of the Netflix app peeking in at the bottom of your HDTV screen which you should be able to select as seen here...

If you don't, then the next thing to do is to go to the "Settings" menu and select the "General" option as seen here.

At this point you can select the "About" option to check to see what version of IOS is installed on your devices. I.e., you probably want the latest software versions available/compatible for both iTunes and your TV device. Here is what I am currently running on my entertainment system device...

If the software is not up to data and you have not automatically received notification of the availability of newer software, then you can go back to the "General" memu as depicted above and select the "Update Software" option to manually check for a firmware (non-volatile software) update which may fix your problem. If this does not fix your problem, I would next try forcing a cold reboot by using the "General > Restart" menu option or simply unplugging and re-plugging in the device.

If this doesn't help, the next step would be to go to the "General > Reset" menu option located just above the "Restart" option as depicted above. Opening this option will give you access to both the "Reset" and "Restore" options which are usually your points of last resort before returning the device to an Apple store or tech support facility for hardware testing. (Of the five units I currently own, one did actually fail between the watching of two movies an was replaced by the local Apple store after confirming a hardware problem instore—so this remains a possibility here for your purchase.

Hope this may help...
