How do I make Motion run 64 bit?

How can I get Motion to utilize all it's available resources?

Is there a preference I missed or did I miss an upgrade for Motion? I'm running version 4.0.3

When I use Motion with my Activity Monitor running, I find that only one core is running at any given time which is a 25% CPU usage.

Activity Monitor also shows many other processes running in 64 bit mode but not Motion. I thought it was a 64 bit program.

I was also surprised to find Compressor only runs 25% CPU but QuickTime hits about 340% using all four CPU's doing the same tasks.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,

DH

Welcome to the discussions.

I'd say search, but with the new forums who knows?

First of all, Motion's cacheing process is 64 bit, so it can access all available memory. Next, Motion uses the GPU, not the CPU to do its processing, so you won't see it on the CPU usage meters.

Finally, Compressor - if rendering a .motn file - does the same thing. If not a .motn file, Compressor must be set up with QMaster to use multiple CPUs.

Here's an article to help you with that...

Thanks Shane,

Boy, I had no idea how many Guru's would be answering my question.

I seem to have another problem. My Apple Qmaster preference pane is non-adjustable.

All I was able to do is click "Stop Sharing". Now everything is grayed out and and the bottom right button says "Stopping". I waited a long time then I restarted but it still is doing it so I have to fix that first.

Thanks for all the help.

I tried Compressor repair and Qmaster is now selectable but Compressor is unavailable for sharing or exporting to.

Everything seems to be falling apart one feature at a time to no fault of Compressor Repair. I'll explain.

I'm following the re-install instructions and it said to upgrade all software :-) so....... I backed up my system in TimeMachine before doing so, then upgraded (including iTunes which, if anything is going to mess things up it's that.) and now I can't render anything in Motion without a crash. I can't export to Compressor or Share so i'll continue to try the re-install and if that doesn't work I'll have to restore back from a better time. Apple always has an answer.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Well,

I ended up having to install FCP Studio and now everything works pretty much, except in Motion I used to be able to simply click File>Share to create a good quality video to send to my collaborators. This seemed to stop working when I upgraded Pro Apps before all my Compressor and Qmaster problems.

So that's what I did to correct my problems. Reinstall according to Article 302845 "Compressor: Troubleshooting basics.

FYI

Thanks for all the help.
