my laptop charger gave me second degree burns!

so my laptop charger was i guess on my bed and i fell asleep with it there and woke up with second degree burns!

just wondering if its normal for the charger thing to heat up that much because it gets really really hot and yeah like i said it burned me very badly... i mean the burn was in the shape of a square of well part of a square

my step dad also has a mac and his charger doesn't heat up like that so I'm wondering if this is at all normal....

Hi Crimson_Arrow and welcome to Apple Support Communities!

So I am guessing here but are you saying the MacBook's AC adapter was in contact with your body (you don't mention where) and that caused your burn? Was the adapter in the open air or under a blanket or possibly between your body and the bed? I'm not blaming you, but they do need ventilation to keep cool.

In any case I would suggest you contact Apple's technical support team. You don't say where you are but you can use the phone number for the appropriate country on this page. If you are close to one you could also take it in to an Apple retail store.

Best of luck.

That is NOT normal! Call Apple and asked to be transferred to "Customer Relations." I'm sure they want to here about this ASAP. I had a battery swell up on a MacBook and they asked me tons of questions--like if it exploded, if I got burnt, etc. Maybe they will cover any medical bills.

Hi, I have just recovered from 5 days off work due to 3rd degree burns on my left foot due to the apple mac charger overheating. I fell asleep whilst on my iPad and my partner was using the apple mac in bed with charger and had dragged the square box section on to my foot without realising I had 1/2 boot of wine and taken 1 sleeping tablet so felt no pain. I suppose accidents do happen but now the charge has completely packed up and computer out of warranty do you think they will replace it for me. Simon

Yes I know you are right but with so many tech things it's monkey see monkey do! Lol so I rarely read the manuals on anything. I spoke to a local mac repair shop in London to replace broken charger and he explained that it is like a small processor inside which needs to be ventilated or on a cool surface so I have learnt my lesson the hard way. I still think with such an important area that they take extra care to point these things out to novice mac users as we come to expect that a charger is a charger and not likely to burn or heat to such extreme tempetures. Thank though for your comments and to all that have replied to my post it is very much appreciated. I will place a photo in my profile pic for a short period just to show you how painfull it was. Thanks to flip flops I wasn't completely without soles on my feet.

Simon :)
