I'm stumped. my sound preference is all gray and says no imput or output. any ideas?

Some features don't work in Safe Mode

Safe Mode can be useful for troubleshooting. However, certain Mac OS X features do not work in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem. The behavior of some devices such as an AirPort card may vary depending on computer and Mac OS X version.

The operative word here is devices. Shouldn't disable all sound. Internal speakers should still be working.

i did that, but no luck. the screen has green, gridy lines in the backround and everything I click on turns green. I can see everything but it's just annoying because everything works fine. besides that, I bought a new aluminum keyboard and I understand there is an issue with volumn control, so I have two keyboards hooked up for the sound, cause my m & p quit on my old one 😟
