NEW IPHONE4

I just baught the IPhone 4 about 4 hours ago ! I was in the middle of entering my contacts, when the phone turned off. It didn't say I was low on battery. I have it charging, but it won't turn on ?!?!? Do I return it ? Is this normal ?

Charge the battery to 100%, turn the iPhone on, then try syncing your contacts.

how long does it take to charge ? Isn't it a little weird that it wont' turn on while it's charging? Or, that he didn't give me a warning that the battery was going to die ?
