can I still use iPhone apps without a contract through a wifi connection?
I simply want to continue using the apps I paid for after my AT&T contract is discontinued and I no longer have cellular service with my iPhone 3GS
iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.3.1

Sure. It works for people with iPod Touches.

thanks. I just want to make sure. I'm about to cut my cellular bill in half with an android.
Just keep the SIM handy as if you ever have to or want to restore it as new, you need a SIM in it to activate it through iTunes (SIM does not need to have service, just be in the device to complete the activation in iTunes so you can sync, update, download stuff, etc).
Other than that, just keep using it as you like. Once the service is switched over to a new phone/SIM, the old iPhone is deaf&dumb as far as cellular service is concerned, but otherwise it keeps on going as it was (although in the USA at least, it could still make emergency calls - illegal to cut off a phone from 911, even one with no service active).
Good luck to you. I'm uncertain as to how changing to Android will halve your bill though? Especially as it would seem you're about to pay for a new phone (up front or via a contract).
Just curious. :-)
most of the phones offered are subpar, however, the LG Optimus S looks like the clear winner of the group for only $50.
I admire the total disregard for the duration and cost of the contract beyond the slight deposit advertised in big print. Just be aware of what you sign for. ;-)
And I admire your proclivity toward assumption and misconception.
