Time Machine hangs when making back up of int & ext hd

I've just connected my new ext hd with my MacBook Air via a usb hub. For the last couple of days I've been unable to get TM to back up both the int and the ext hds. If I disconnect the ext hd, TM backs up the int hd smoothly, apparently, but when I try to get it to back up with the ext hd plugged in it hangs when reaching about 77 MB. I've already reformatted the ext hd and before I pludded it in via the usb hub it worked fine. I've tried to plugg the ext hd directly into my MB Air and it acts in the same way as when plugged in via the hub.

I've also checked if the ext hd was on the exception list in TM and it isn't...

Any ideas as to what the problem is and how I solve this?

I have a similar problem. My new Macbook air, mid 2011 i7 running 10.7.1 with an OWC 360GB SSD, hangs after an hour of time machine back up when backing up to a drictly connected external usb drive. The drive is a brand new SansDigital TowerStor TS2CT with 2TB x2 drives. At first I thought the new drive was the problem, but it works fine as a time machine disk for my MBP running 10.7.1.

When it hangs the time machine indicator is turning and the menu is active at first but when I start clicking on things I rapidly get a SBOD and no apps launch. No force quite either so hard reboot is the only way out.

Anyone else having time mchine hangs?

I've just discovered that I can not back up to usb disks attached to a airport extreme. My MBA finds the disk and will allow me to set that express usb disk as the distination but as soon as it tries to start the backup, I get an error stating that the disk is not available--even though it is mounted and time machine sees it.

Do I need to reinstall LION or are others having this problem?

I have no idea why anybody but a PC swicther would rely on the only worse backup than NO backup, there are plenty of far better/easier/ more useful options! 😉
