When you say you need the "OS" for your PowerBook G4, do you mean the original install discs? Also, what type of powerbook G4 do you have? If you have one of the last models, they only support 10.4.2 and up to 10.5.8 - The sad part is that the original software discs can't be gotten at Apple since they discontinued all duplicates for PowerPC machines. You best bet is to search on line for the original install discs.
I might be able to help you somewhat depending on the type of PowerBook G4 you have. Email me and I will be more than happy to assist. It seems also that when you boot up and all you get is the Apple Icon or logo it appears the OS installation on the drive might be faulty. Here is what you can do to try and fix it..
When you boot up your powerbook, IMMEDIATELY press command-S(Apple logo + S on the keyboard) - this will bring you to SINGLE USER MODE.. Now type in: /sbin/fsck -fy and that will begin the repair process for your start up disc.
If that does not resolve the issue, then you can use diskwarrior from Alsoft. If nothing else helps, then you will need a Leopard retail install disc which can be had for 129.00 from AppleCare. Yes, they still have them.
Hope all this helps.
