It is probably your hard drive. This is very bad.
Ticking can mean that your hard drive is failing or close to crashing.
Launch Disk Utility(Applications>Utility folder) and check your hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. status. Select the top level of your Hard Drive and look at the bottom of the window. What does it say? Also run Verify Disk.
The S.M.A.R.T. status reads verified and running Verify Disk resulted in the text "The volume Macintosh HD appears OK."
Well that's a positive sign, but I still recommend you backup your computer(or at least all your important files). I've seen drives go down without any warning.
What area of your macbook is the noise coming from? Right side of the trackpad or some other area?
After backing up my important documents and files, I restarted the computer and everything seems fine for now -- no noise at all. Still not sure what the problem was, but thanks for your help. If it starts making noises again, at least I'll have an idea of where to start looking for the problem.
Thank you.
