I've been using an Airport Extreme for some time now and have no complaints. Recently however my setup requires that I migrate to a router solution that can support dd-wrt firmware which, as I understand it, the Airport Extreme cannot do.
So I'm looking for recommendations for the best dd-wrt compatible router out there that plays nicely with Macs.

like Bob says : Linksys. I use one as an extension to my Airport in a downstairs/upstairs link. The Linksys has dd-wrt firmware loaded by me.
Sorry, I'm not up to speed on the current Cisco - Linksys models, so can't provide specific advice on that.
So which are you using as the bridge? I ask because I'm very happy with the Airport but I need a router that supports dd-wrt so that I can have the router connect directly to a VPN service. I'm wondering if I can simply keep the Airport setup as is but then add a Linksys and have it connet to the VPN.
My Airport is connected to my cable modem and bridge to the Linksys that is upstairs.
Go to the dd-wrt site and look up what downloads are available for what devices. I have one of the original pre-N routers and it works well.

I wonder though...
If I were to replicate a similar setup I wonder if I'd be able to accomplish what I'm after, ie if the Airport is connected to the cable modem then having the bridged Linksys setup with the VPN isn't going to really work is it? Would think I'd have to flip it so that it's the Linksys connected to the cable modem so that all traffic is going via the VPN
Did you get this figured out? I'm wanting to do this as well. I would think the VPN router would be connected to the modem. How did you set up your VPN router and your airport?

I upgraded my package with my ISP and as a result was forced to use their router so using the Airport was no longer an option. In the end I resolved what I was trying to accomplish by setting up a VPN on my iMac and using another service on my AppleTV.
