System Will Not Shut Down

I recently installed all of my iTunes music onto a 4TB G-RAID drive. Access to the music works without a hitch, although it takes a few seconds for iTunes to open because of the size of my library.

When it comes time to shut down the computer, however, my mac freezes up and the dreaded beach ball appears. Sometimes I'll quit iTunes and eject the G-RAID drive first before shutdown, but the problem persists.

Any ideas?

So if I understand correctly. Some times your computer fails to shutdown properly. When this happens the cursor turns into a beach ball. This issue happens with or without itunes open. this issue happens even if the external hard drive has been ejected.

When the issue happens, dose the computer manage to log you out of your account, And then the issue happens? or dose it get stuck with the dock and all your files still visible?

if you just boot, without the external hard drive plugged in, and then shutdown, do you still have the issue?

Have you tried a safeboot?

Thanks for your reply.

Usually when the shutdown problem occurs, the computer logs out. One correction I should make: it is NOT the beach ball but the spinning "spoke" that appears. I always let this run for quite a while ( minutes) before I manually kill the power.

I tried a safe boot, ran iTunes and then tried to shutdown without ejecting the external drive that has all my music files. It worked without a hitch. However, the sound output wasn't recognized (no speaker icon on the screen) so I could "play" but couldn't hear my music. System preferences showed no input or output sources in the sound category.

I then started up the computer the conventional way, ran iTunes again and tried to shutdown without ejecting the external drive. It took a long time for the computer to setup, but when I used the shut down command - after exiting iTunes - it logged out and shut down just fine.

Keeping my fingers crossed.
