How can I check sync settings without connecting phone to computer?

How can I access Devices and all of the subcategories without attaching my iPhone to my computer? Syncing messes up my iPhone, and I want to check the sync settings without connecting the phone. When I go to iTunes, the Device menu does not appear unless I connect my phone, and when I connect my phone, the contact info on both my computer and my phone are erased (no email addresses on my computer, no phone numbers on my phone).

You can't, but you can disable auto-syncing before you connect your phone, then the phone will only sync when you hit the sync button: iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices>Prevent iPods/iPhones from syncing automatically. Put a check in that box.

Or Prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings: Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Command-Option (on a Mac) or Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPhone appear in the iTunes sidebar.
