I have the Verizon iPhone 4.  It just received iOS 4.2.7 a few days ago.  Any way to find out how large an OS update will be before actually downloading it?  If not, is there any way to find out how large it was after the fact?  I sometimes have better Internet connections available that would be more efficient for any large downloads, and would like to control when they occur.

Thanks,

Gary

They're all pretty big.  If I'm not mistaken the last one (iOS 4.2.7) was 600 meg and some change.  I believe Apple does whole images, not incremental patches.

Wow!  No wonder I got shut down by my ISP.  Got a daily limit of about half that, via satellite.  Any way to see how huge before the download?  I need to seek other connections to hit one that size out of the blue.

I don't believe Apple posts this anywhere (but I could be wrong).  You can google search it before you do it and somebody somewhere will have this information.  But like I said, they're all very large.  If necessary, you may be able to get this done for you at either an Apple or Verizon store if you're limited on download size or if your speed throughput is extremely slow.  A dialup connection would take about 7 hours to get this update for example.  So whenever Apple updates, you're likely going to need an alternative.

I do have an alternative (4G MiFi) I can switch to if I notice in time when I sync my iPhone, I just don't use it most of the time.  Thank you for the answers.  4.2.7 was my first update to the iPhone.operating system, and I wasn't prepared for the problems it created that time due to my daily download limits.

Go to "http://ios.e-lite.org", and start the download, but pause it. Then check the downloads manager that your browser uses (IE will automatically pop the download box up, Chrome is "Ctl + J" on Windows and "Command + Shift + J" on Mac, Safari is "Alt + Command + L" on Mac and unsure on Windows, Firefox is "Ctl + J" on Windows and unsure on Mac).

This will show you how big the download is. Then you can choose to download or deny and wait for a bigger download allowance.
