On a Macintosh, how do I configure the wireless printer and install the printer driver WITHOUT a cable?

STEP I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

Gather the following wireless network settings of your access point or router. Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.

*NOTE: The Brother machine only supports WPA2-PSK with AES. If you are using WPA2-PSK with TKIP you will receive a connection error.

If you do not have the network settings information or cannot find this information, refer to the solution - How do I find the Wireless Security Information on my Wireless Macintosh OSX computer?

If you need to contact your router manufacturer for assistance gathering the required information, refer to the following link to obtain contact information for common router manufacturers:

STEP II: Perform a factory reset on the printer network card

1. 1. Turn off the printer.
2. 2. Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in.
3. 3. Hold down Go as you turn on the power switch. Keep Go pressed down until all the LEDs light up and then Status LED turns off.
4. 4. Release Go. Make sure that all the LEDs are off.
5. 5. Press Go six times. Make sure that all the LEDs light up to indicate the print server has been reset to its factory default settings. The printer will restart.

STEP III: Enable the Wireless Network Card

1. With the printer power turned on and the printer Ready, hold down the GO button for about 15 seconds. Release theGO button when the printer prints a Network Configuration page.

2. Locate the Node Type at the top of the page.

- If the Node Type is Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), go to STEP 3.

- If the Node Type is Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive) or Brother NC-6800h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), you will need to enable the wireless network card again, repeat STEP III.

3. Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute after the reset before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to reset.

4. Print the Printer Settings by pressing the GO button 3 times.

5. Locate the IP Address in the middle and the Comm. Mode and Name (SSID) near the bottom. Verify:

a. IP Address of the printer is a 169.254.x.x number.

b. Comm Mode is Ad-hoc.

c. Name (SSID) is SETUP.

d. If the IP Address is not a 169.254.x.x number, the Comm Modes is not Ad-hoc, and the Name (SSID) is not SETUP, you will need to reset the printer network card and enable the wireless network card again, start again from STEP II.

STEP IV: Communicate to the printer WITHOUT a network cable and configure the wireless settings

1. To communicate with the printer in Ad-hoc mode, the wireless computer needs to join the printer's SETUP network.

NOTE: If you are using a third party utility to manage your wireless connections, contact the manufacturer for assistance with the following steps.

2. If you are using the Macintosh operating system to manage your wireless connections, use the following steps:

a. In the Airport Wireless Utility, connect to SETUP.

b. The wireless icon will turn gray.

STEP V: Configure the Wireless Network Card

1. Open a web browser. An error message will appear informing you are not connected to the internet.

2. Enter the IP Address of the printer into the web browser screen and press ENTER. The Brother Web Management screen will appear.

3. Click on Network Configuration near the top of the screen. (Figure 3).

4. A login screen will appear. Enter the following:

Username: admin

Password: access

Then click OK.

5. Click Configure Wireless near the middle of the screen. (Figure 4).

6. Change the Communication Mode to Infrastructure. (Figure 5).

7. Click the BROWSE button next to the Wireless Network Name (SSID). (Figure 5).

8. Select the Name (SSID) for your network and click OK (Figure 6). Refer to the network settings information gathered in STEP I.

9. Leave the Channel setting as is.

10. Select the appropriate Authentication Method from the drop down list (Figure 7). Refer to the network settings information gathered in STEP I.

11. Select the appropriate Encryption Method (Figure 8). Refer to the network settings information gathered in STEP I.

NOTE: If WEP is selected as the Encryption Method, enter the hex code for the WEP Key 1. There is no need to enter the Passphrase for WEP Encryption.

NOTE: If using an Authentication Method other than Open or Shared is selected, then a Passphrase must be entered on the Passphrase line (Figure 9).

12. Click Submit to update the printer with your wireless settings (Figure 10).

13. A screen indicating the settings have been updated successfully should appear. (Figure 11). The printer wireless network card is now Active on the network.

14. Switch your computer BACK to your wireless access point or wireless router, rather than the SETUP network. If you need assistance doing this, please refer back to the start of STEP IV.

15. Verify the printer is now attached to the wireless access point or wireless router:

a. Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

b. Print the Printer Settings by pressing the GO button 3 times. Look at the last page of the Printer Settings.

c. Locate the IP Address in the middle and confirm it is assigned via DHCP. (Figure 12).

d. Locate the Comm Mode near the bottom and confirm it is set to Infrastructure. (Figure 13).

e. Locate the Name (SSID) near the bottom and confirm it matches your access point or router. (Figure 13).

f. Locate the Wireless Link Status near the bottom and confirm it reads Link OK. (Figure 13).

NOTE: If the IP Address is 0.0.0.0, wait another minute and print out the settings pages again. If the IP Address is still 0.0.0.0, please reset the router by powering it off, then back on. Also, turn the printer off, then back on. Wait approximately one minute. Print out the Network Settings page again and verify the settings. If the IP Address is still a 0.0.0.0 number, please verify your security information in STEP I is correct and start again from STEP II.

If the IP Address is a 169.254.x.x number and the Wireless Link Status in LINK OK, please check your router for MAC filtering. If MAC filtering is enabled, please enter the MAC address to the list. If MAC filtering is not enable, please reset the router by powering it off, then back on. Also, turn the printer off, then back on. Wait approximately one minute. Print out the Network Settings page again and verify the settings. If the IP Address is still a 169.254.x.x number, please verify your security information in STEP I is correct and start again from STEP II.

If the IP Address is a 169.254.x.x number and the Wireless Link Status in FAILED TO ASSOCIATE, please reset the router by powering it off, then back on. Also, turn the printer off, then back on. Print out the Network Settings page again and verify the settings. If the IP Address is still a 169.254.x.x number, please verify your security information in STEP I is correct and start again from STEP II.

The printer is now configured and is operating on your network.

STEP VI: Printer Driver Installation

If you are using Macintosh OS 10.6 or higher or you do not have the Brother software CD, refer to solution - How do I download and install the CUPS driver for Macintosh OS X?

This is how I got the HL-5370DW to work with Airport Extreme Dual Band.

First I had to reset the printer to it's factory defaults (because I had previously set it up to work wirelessly with a Netgear Router). The Setup Wizard that came with the printer would not see the HL-5370DW in the wireless setp until I reset the printer back to defaults.

For HL-5350DN and HL-5370DW

1 - Turn off the machine.

2 - Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in.

3 - Hold down Go as you turn on the power switch. Keep Go pressed down until the all LEDs light up, and then the Status LED turns off.

4 - Release Go. Make sure that all the LEDs turn off.

5 - Press Go six times. Make sure that all the LEDs light up to indicate the print server has been reset to its factory default settings. The machine will restart.

The other thing I had to do was to use AES insted of TKIP for the Encryption mode.

Hope this helps someone. It only took me 3.5 hours to figure this out...😉

OS X 10.7 (Lion) no longer supports the Brother HL-5370DW printer driver and software install from DVD. The "Start Here" app on the DVD gives the error message:

"You can't open the application Start Here because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

I was able to download the drivers from Brother support and install and set up the wireless with the instructions above, but it is a very much a manual process now.

I downloaded the drivers from the Brother support and supposedly installed it. After the setup process completes and you close the setup window, nothing really happens. I can't find an Brother setup program or anything. What was that manual process you used to set up the wiresless printing?

Have you added the Brother printer in the System Preferences; Print & Scan?

If you have, press Options & Supplies...

Then press Show Printer WebPage...

If not, you may need to connect to your router with an ethernet cable and try to set up the wireless with your security. Mine was like Sean's, AES.The trick will be to get to that web page.

Frankly, it has been awhile since I got it set up, I haven't looked at it since.

Reviving a dead post. I have a 2 year old Brother 5370DW. I recently bought a MBA and had some old instructions I got from Brother to install. No Luck... Then, I just went to print/scan in preferences and saw my MBA saw the printer... Voila!

This is absolutely the trick for my apple base station woes: the settings is "WPA" and "AES" and put in the password for the basestation (not a Hex key). I include this as redundant only because I hope others will find this post sooner than later; I found this only after two hours of troubleshooting using Brother's website support (to no avail).

I had a similar issue. In my case a new Airport Extreme replaced another wi-fi router. Used the same wireless network name (SSID) and password. Everything (computers, phones ) worked except the Brother wireless printer. Solution for me was to change the Airport Extreme network security from WPA2 Personal to WPA/WPA2 Personal. Once I did this the Brother printer (HL-5370DW) wireless worked again. Had no effect on the other devices on the network.

This was definitely part of the solution for me; however, I had tried to print after changing this setting, but the printer window said "printer offline"; so I put the install CD in, and *started* to set up wireless network. The first step was to hold the GO button for 10 seconds to confirm the printer was "wireless enabled". Once I completed this step, the printer simply started working wireless (all qued documents printed up), and I just exited the setup utility. The printer had always worked with ethernet, but perhaps I had overlooked this final step? Either way, I am back to wireless printing (no more moving computers to hook up the ethernet cable).

Hope this helps someone else as this has been a thorn in my side for a loooong time. And my kids were impressed (no easy task these days).
