Apple 17" CRT studio display screen coating

I've been scearching apple support and discussions for about two hours on this issue with little help, so I thought I would pass it by you fellows as there seems to be a lot of knowledge on this forum.

The anti-glare coating on my display screen is starting to get blotchy. I suspect it is wearing away (maybe from to much, or the wrong type of cleaning). The coating seems to be slightly darker than the glass underneath.

I did find one thread in displays discussions where another user was having a similiar problem. He was advised to take off all the coating with something called "Weiman glass cook-top cleaner" and to use an adobie sponge. He said to coat the screen and to scrub it all off. The man with the problem evidently tried this and reported it worked.

Still, I don't want to make the problem worse as now it is only annoying.
Does anyone know anthing about this? Sorry to be off topic.

Hi, Lawrence. Given that any CRT display can be replaced nowadays for under $100 (under $25 for many), I wouldn't hesitate to try the method you saw recommended. If you then find that the display surface is too reflective without the antiglqare surface, mask off the bezel and give the visible part of the screen two or three thin coats of a matte acrylic spray, which you can buy at any art-supply store. You'll then have to be really careful cleaning it, as the spray will be less resistant to scrubbing than the original coating was. But if it does get damaged, you can always remove and repeat it, or replace the monitor with another used one.

Thanks guys,

I guess I will try the "Fix", but maybe I will allow the coating to get a little worse before I do. Since I have owned the hardware I have - I have loved the monitor, actually better than I have liked the Cube. Maybe you can buy a CRT cheap now, but this one wasn't cheap at the time I bought it. Still, I have never regretted buying it. I like that it has two USB connections on it. Hard to tell you how useful that has been.
