iTunes Genius

I have a very large library of music which I do not store in my iTunes Library, because I prefer to not bog down my laptop with so many files. I update my 160gb iPod Classic manually. Will the Genius feature work for files stored strictly on the iPod? Or do the files have to be in one's library in order for Genius to function?
