I currently use an Olympus LS11 to make wildlife sound recordings. I'm considering selling this and just using the iPhone's built microphone/recorder instead. How do the specifications of the Olympus LS11 compare, here's a link to them:

I have compared a different Olympus Voice Reorder and an iPhone when recording lectures in a university lecture hall, and the iPhone microphone is no match for the microphone on the dedicated voice recorder. The iPhone did not pick up the voices anywhere near as clearly or loudly.
I would stick with the Olympus for sound quality, but if you would like to rcecord and manage the files from your iPhone, have you considered a product like the Alesis Protrack? http://www.alesis.com/protrack
