the connected display is not authorized to play protected movies

I have to say it's the most ridiculous thing that you can't use the hdmi output from the iPad (using apples own adapter) to play hd movies on a TV.

I have purchased the TV, the iPad, the adapter, and the movie, and yet still it's not allowed!!!

is there any way around this or any plan to fix it?

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.2

I have the same problem and I am pretty upset about this. I bought an IPad 2, and the hdmi cable and I can not view HD material on my (quite modern) Samsung LED TV...

Really?!?!

What is with this, I PAID itunes to get that episode of Dr Who, I want to LEGALLY watch it on my display and I can not... This is unsatisfactory

It doesn't work?

It's not mirroring the iPad screen?

It's not playing back YouTube, Netflix, abc player or any games or apps that allow it?

Sounds like a defective cable or iPad.

Or did you mean it doesn't work the way you thought it should, Apple did not read your mind and know the media you wanted to play would not work, did not jump out of concealment and slap it out of your hand crying," No! This will not work for what you intend, do not buy it!"

Exactly.

The description of the product is:

"Use the Apple Digital AV Adapter to mirror whatever’s on your iPad 2 screen — apps, presentations, websites, and more — on your HDTV or HDMI-compatible display in up to 1080p HD (movies play at up to 720p)."

Apparently the OP (and others) have an HDTV and an IPad2 , which is all it says you need, and it is NOT mirroring whatever is on [their] iPad 2 screen. So it is not working as described, it is not mirroring the iPad screen.

The product description is incomplete, it needs a caveat about DRM content requiring an HDCP TV.

I have the same problem. I just purchased the cable because my wife wanted to watch movies we purchased on our TV. It is very frustrating that we are restricted from watching movies we have legally purchased.

The person at the apple store who sold me the cable assured me that i could play anything on My Iphone (or Itouch) on the TV.

I completely agree I bought the special HDMI adapter and cable especially so that I could watch movies rented on my i pad 2 on my TV. At first all went very well and I was delighted as I watched 2 movies ( "Tinker tailor Soldier Spy and Warrior). Since then 2 movies rented (The Ides of March and We Need to Talk About Kevin)l carry the same error message "you are not authorised to watch this movie on this display". I tunes have refunded rental costs but this is not really the point. Why don't they identify the protected movies in the details provided BEFORE you rent them? Also copyright is not infringed as you have paid the rental price and its yours for 30 days. Is there the same issue with purchased movies does any-one know the answer? Apple support don't know. It all seems a bit trial and error.
