Sync with iPhoto 11: Events in iTunes not same as in iPhoto 11

I have an event to which I have been merging photos off and on since Sept. 2010. Up to the last time I synced the iPad, that event displayed as a single event in the iTunes list from which I select the photos that I want to sync between iPhoto and the iPad. Now, however, that event appears split in iTunes, even though it is still a single event in iPhotos. Since I have specified to sync all photos, I am now seeing about fifty event with the same name as the single event on the iPad, even though it is a single event in iPhotos.

I have rebuilt my iPhoto library, but that does not seem to help.

Has anybody experienced this problem and solved it? If not, does anybody have suggestions?

I am having the EXACT same problem as Richard Liu with iPhoto when syncing to my iPod touch and iPad.

Example:

On my computer one EVENT is titled BABY KITTEN - a 12 month time period with multiple dates. After sync is completed the BABY KITTEN Event is split to about 20 albums (20 different dates) on iPod Touch and iPad. Multiply that times several of my EVENTS with the same structure and it's a garbled mess.

Apple, PLEASE PLEASE give me back my old method!!

Same here, but I only had the problem beginning today. I lost my air play and in the curse of trying to recover it with the help of apple care, i installed a operating system update to 4.3.3, reset my ipad to fatory settings and restored data from a backup to protect the operating system. Thats when one of my events, (i think only one I have 10,000 photos and haven't checked every event) which had over 200 pictures from a recent vacation got split into about 50 events some of which have only one photo. It is still one event in iPhoto. I also rebuilt the data base and permissions in iPhoto then re-synced and it is still the same, this one event is split into 50 . In iPhoto it is still one! Before the upgrade to 4.3.3 software on the iPad2 the events in iPhoto and on iPad2 were the same! I suspect the upgraded operating software 4.3.3!

Same problem, here; however, I feel like I noticed the problem the day before installing 4.3.3 - I'm going with that it's a bug in the latest update to iPhoto.

I was about to go through rebuilding the library, etc - so I'm glad (in some ways) to see that doing those things does not fix the problem. You all just saved me some valuable time. Thanks!

The problem is definitely in the latest update to iPhoto, rel. 9.1.2. When I reported it, iOS 4.3.3 wasn't yet available. Furthermore, third-party software that syncs photos in iPhoto have the same problem as I reported here. Read Brian Webster's blog at www.fatcatsoftware.com. Brian is the developer of iPhoto Library Manager.

By the way, Brian Webster is now reporting that he has implemented a work around for the problem in an update of iPhoto Library Manager. So, in that program, the events will not be split, but, of course, that doesn't help other programs like iTunes. Perhaps Apple might like to get in touch with him to find out how to do things cleanly. I can't recall Brian ever having released a version of iPLM that fixed some things only to break others.

I have been experiencing the same issues as everybody else in this thread. I have found a small work around. Its not perfect and doesn't fix the problem permanently but it works long enough for me to sync my iOS devices easily.

What I did was open both iPhoto and iTunes with my iOS device plugged in. I go to iPhoto and change Event-View to "By Title" and to "Ascending". Then I go back to iTunes and change the iOS tab from Photos to Apps (or any other tab) and back to Photos. After that all my events are in order and grouped together (not broken into a bunch of the same event). I can then sync them easily and without dup events. For some reason the work around doesn't last forever and I'm forced to repeat the steps when the events get broken up again. It's not perfect but until Apple releases a fix it will do.

I wonder why you think the problem is in iPhoto. The events are fine in iPhoto they only get screwed up when you sync them to an iPad. I think it is the iPad operating system 4.3.3. I was fine until OS 4.3.3 went into my iPad2!!

(However I don't know when the iPhoto 9.1.2 upgrade installed, I don't think it was at the same time as the ipad OS upgrade)) I know Apple has been working on removing location data mining from their mobile devices I wonder if this is at the root. Could the events be broken up by location but still be given the same name?

Thanks dzbez, it worked for me, but it feels as if we are the mythical monkeys that might randomly produce the bible.

On May the 5th, or there-abouts it seems Apple turned into General Motors and Microsoft and Microcenter all at once. I came back into the U.S. to find that my iCal doesn't work at me.com any more (blank calendar, an hour on the phone with suggestions to keep pushing the rock up the hill and hope it doesn't roll back on me, and an email from support offering another trip up the same hill), then I prepare for another trip two days from now by synching an important set of ~180 photos to my iPad 2 to find that 5 made it and the event is now a dozen events, and support is in implausible deniability.

And I could give a f... about Apple solving the "location-mining'" problem. This is taking a .1% problem and thrashing elegance. That's why using Microsoft products is like having a chastity belt slapped on me when I really just want satisfaction.

@Gregory,

I believe the problem is in iPhoto 9.1.2 because other programs that present event lists to their users, e.g. iPhoto Library Manager, are presenting split events just like iTunes is, and those programs aren't doing anything with iOS devices. Apple has apparently changed something in the organization of the iPhoto data, intentionally or not, with which iPhoto can deal, but other programs, incl. iTunes, cannot.

Hmmmmmm...must have upgraded iPhoto in same release with the new OS.

Where is Apple in all of this? They must hear the chorous wailing! There are several similar threads now running.

Has anyone tried taking iPhoto off time machine backup from a couple of weeks ago? I wonder if the damage is now in the info on the pictures or just in the iPhoto software? I have 11000 Photos on iPad2 and I am cringing at the thought.

I noticed also that there are stray photos in events that are not split up on the iPad2 ( that weren't in those events before all this happened.and am not sure if that is part of this same problem!

May 9, 2011 6:37 AM in response to Gregory Lazarchik

@Gregory,

Yes, I have restored iPhoto 9.1.1 from Time Machine. I also ended up restoring the last version of iPhoto Library on which iPhoto 9.1.1 was used. It's important that you don't use the older version of iPhoto in conjunction with a version of iPhoto Library that has been touched by iPhoto 9.1.2. Of course, you will then have to redo any work that you did in iPhoto 9.1.2. And when you next sync an iOS device, iTunes will notice that you are syncing with a different library and ask permission to delete the photos on the device and replace them by the photos you have selected. That, in turn, will involve optimizing the photos for the device. 11,000 photos will take a long time, but not as long as my 18,000+ photos.

By the way, restoring an iPhoto Library of 18,000+ photos creates problems of its own. The library is approx. 154 GB large, and I didn't have enough room on my hard disk for the then-current version and the version to be restored, so I had to delete the former and empty the Trash in order to create enough space.

Did anyone get a concrete answer to this issue?.

Lucky me is just dealing with this in the last two days.

Everything is good iphoto, but any event/ faces is messed up when synced on my ipad or iphone.

Seemingly random picures are within every event.

I have rebuilt the library, the thumb nails - nothing has worked.

I suspect that installing Adobe Photoshop Element 10 has 'stolen' some photos from their original locations and now iTunes can't find them. but why only some?

thoughts?
