Although you can re-download apps, you cannot re-download songs. You are expected to take steps to back them up against the possibility of losing them.

If you have had, say, a major hard disk failure and lost your purchased songs, it's possible that iTunes Support might allow you to re-download, but it's entirely at their discretion and they are in no way obliged to do this.

However, if the songs are still on your iPod you can transfer them back to your computer - please see this page:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848

To contact iTunes Support, go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ - click on 'Other iTunes Store Features' in the list and then on 'Podcasts'. You will see a link to either 'Express Lane', which will guide you eventually to some contact options, or you may see a link to email them.

My laptop was recently thrown to the ground and stomped by an angry person, cracking the hard drive. No, I did not have all of my purchased music backed-up. I bought a new computer, and fortunately, one of the geniuses at the apple store told me about this new feature:

    Open itunes

make sure you're logged-in to your itunes account

go to the home page of the itunes store (the one with the little monopoly house icon, and the flashy advertising)

on the left side, under "Quick Links", is an option called "Purchased"

from there you should be able to navigate your way around and re-download purchased itunes assets

    hope this helps

Any luck on downloading previous purchased music from Apple.

The link for redownloading music only works in the US.

    I am in the UK

You have never been able to redownload music.  The icloud is  a new feature that allow this and is beta testing in the U.S.  it will not be released to everyone until the fall.

And by all accounts not in the UK until next year as they are still haggling over the rights.

    Ugh.

This has taken TOO long to come about. Why shouldn't I just buy CDs, it's a lot easier to do.

Yep - this worked for me, too, although I am in the States. And I gotta tell ya - this is AWESOME. It's honest. It's amazing. And it's the right thing to do to make sure people keep using iTunes. To have the ability to go back and re-download stuff I downloaded years ago is amazing, even after two or three computer changes. Thanks Apple -- great move for user satisfaction, convenience, and trust, even if the equipment is a bit expensive. Now that I know music is always in the cloud, it makes my decision to stay with apple even easier.....

    Ignore this post.

Would help if I actually read what people posted properly.

    Thanks.

Thanks! Worked for me too in Canada! Great service and thanks Apple for doing it right.

My computer hasn't crashed, but my external hard drive that I store iTunes media on has gone funny on me, corrupting some of the files. I deleted the corrupted files but it still says that they are "downloaded" when I try to re-download them in the Purchased section of the iTunes store. Does anyone know how I can make it so iTunes will know that the files are no longer in my library?

This is no longer the layout.  Now you still go to the "home" page (which of course is not what opens by default; you have to click the "house" icon at the top), but the "purchased" link is at the upper right of that page.

So you deleted the entries from the library and you deleted the files themselves from the drive?  I would think that would do it.  But then again, this is iTunes we're talking about.

I had to do this today cos one of my new purchases got corrupted on download.

Once you've deleted the purchased songs and moved them to the trash, close iTunes, then re-open it.

Click the "Purchased" link on the sidebar, it's under the STORE section.

At the bottom right there should be a link to "Download Previous Purchases". iTunes will check the status of all your purchases and whether they are in your library or not. You can then browse to the songs you need and re-download them.

    Easy peasy! Good luck!
