iMac screen flickered and went blank

Thanks Carolyn. Turns out the machine wasn't dead. It was actually on but the screen was off. I held down the start up button for a few seconds and was then able to restart it. I will try running the hardware test tonight.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize the machine was still running. It was just the screen that had shut off. After I restarted it seemed to be back to normal but I'm going to try running the hardware test tonight, as Carolyn suggested.
