Any Windows user can see and read files on the Mac partition.

I have Bootcamp installed on my MacBook Pro. I was just getting ready to do some work in Windows XP and decided to see if I could access any directories or files on the Mac partition of this hard drive.

Turns out that I can. In fact, and Windows user can access all of my Mac documents, see them in my Mac user account, and even open them from Windows.

This seems like a major security issue. Do I need to change a setting in my Mac user account so that people using Windows in this computer don't have access to my private files?

Personally I'm not sure how Windows is seeing the OS X partition. For any of the bootcamp partitions I have created/used the OS X partition is not visible to Windows.

When using XP how does your User folder, and thus all your personal files, display? Do you see the OS X partition as a Hard Drive or are the folders shown some other way?

a) I think the file is in > C:\Windows\System32\drivers\AppleMNT.sys < Just renaming it to "AppleMNT.sys.old" and restart your computer should take away the driver for reading HFS+ partitions.

b) Using FileVault on Mac would secure your home folder, but the rest of the HD is still readable

c) Hiding the partition in Windows by removing drive letter in disk management

I would prefer a) because b) and c) are just workarounds.

I used the version included with 10.6.7, which must have been 2.0 based on the outcome. Checking the Bootcamp FAQ for v3.0 I can see it mentions introducing support for viewing the Mac partition. Just now I ran the ASU in XP and the 3.2 Bootcamp update was installed, but I still don't have the mount sys file - I saw the file I noted before was actually for the trackpad.

Anyway, thank you for your reply. In searching I saw the OP had posted the same question in the Bootcamp forum and got a similar reply to your part A suggestion.

OMG. Really? Someone who has physical access to the computer has access to anything unencrypted on the hard drive.

Sorry if it appears petulent. If you give someone physical access to the computer, there is no way beyond encryption that you can prevent them from viewing the data. Shall I repeat that?

If you are not already aware, it is impossible to secure your data if you give physical access to the computer to someone else, short of encryption.

No Mac user can see any other Mac user's files. And no Windows user can see any other Windows user's files. But if I install Bootcamp, ANY Windows user can see ANY Mac user's files. That's dangerous.

The answer above is helpful. Option (a) at least makes the Mac hard drive and Mac user's files not obviously visible.

Your answer is petulant and not helpful.
