Can't uncheck "connected servers" from Finder Preferences

I have two Airport disks shared from my Airport Extreme Base Station. When they are mounted the disk icons are on my desktop. Because I don't want them on my desktop I've tried to remove them using Finder > Preferences > Uncheck "Connected servers". The problem is, the check box never un-checks. Literally, the checkmark never goes away. The box stays checked and I can't remove the icons from my desktop.

How do I un-check "Connected servers"?

I unchecked "external disks" from both the general and side bar preferences and it didn't have any effect on the two volumes mounted and visible as icons on my desktop. If I check "external disks" a USB attached drive connected to my machine shows up on the desktop.

The problem I'm having is that the checkbox for "Connected servers" cannot be unchecked from Finder Preferences > General.

Here is a quick video of what I'm talking about.
