Screen Sharing dialog box stuck on "Connecting..."

Every so often, the Screen Sharing dialog box that asks the user to "Enter your name and password to share the screen of "Computername", gets stuck on "Connecting...". The "Cancel" and the "Connect" button appear dimmed.

Quitting Screen Sharing and/or relaunching the Finder have no effect.

Is there any way to cancel out of this (perhaps using a Unix command in Terminal?) other than restarting?

Thanks for any input on this.

No, not looking to disable Screen Sharing, just to clear the dialog box (it floats above all other windows) without restarting.

Found this post that resolves the issue:

"This happens to me often if I have a problem connecting a remote computer -- those connecting windows just never go away if they hang. The issue is that NetAuthAgent is hanging. To get rid of these without rebooting:

From GUI:

1. Launch the Activity Monitor program.

2. In the Process Name list, look for "NetAuthAgent". It may show as "Not Responding".

3. Select NetAuthAgent, and then click Quit Process (the red stop sign button at the top of the Activity Monitor window). Then, click Force Quit.

From Terminial:

1. ps ax | grep NetAuthAgent

2. kill <pid-of-the-process-found-above>

This should get rid of the dialog boxes and the hung process, and VNC/Screen Sharing should continue to work, as it will launch NetAuthAgent again when it needs it."

This did just what I was looking to do!

Hi Scott:

Sorry to here that you're not able to get rid of the dialog box.

For what it's worth, I'm using Activity Monitor to do the force quit. Also, this works on on two iMacs (one running Mac OS X 10.6.6 and the other running Mac OS X 10.6.7) and on one MacBook Pro (running 10.6.6).

So, I guess you're stuck with restarting to get out of the dialog box?

One of my favorite UNIX commands got rid of the Screen Sharing "connecting..." window for me. Mine was up the previous night at home, and remained after I got a network connection in the coffee shop.

pkill NetAuth

Pkill gave instant gratification. I don't know why OS X doesn't have pkill. You can get it here.

Another user saved from being stuck on "Connecting..."!

lazymoose, I'm curious... are you running Mac OS 10.6.8 or something earlier? I don't seem to have had the issue happen since getting all my machines to 10.6.8. Although, I have no idea if there was anything in the point 8 update that addressed this issue.

Slightly off topic: There have been posts about how to quit the NetAuthAgent via Activity Monitor and via Terminal. For me personally, it's a little ironic for me to be launching Terminal and typing a command line to kill a process as I started to use a Mac (back when Mac OS 7 was just released sometimes around 1993 or so) to get away from UNIX and the corresponding command lines in the first place.
