Q: Final Cut Pro 4 "General Error"

I'm trying to edit Final Cut Pro 4 projects at home and at school. I'm using an external hard drive and the media manager to transfer the files. After transferring the clips to my Macbook Air I realized when I view the clips they play completely normally. However, When I select and preview the clips while importing them into FCP they show up as audio files, pictures with audio, or choppy videos that appear to be cached files.

All of the files I'm viewing are .mov. When I attempt to import the files, a "general error" message appears. I'm not sure how to change file formats and I don't know if whatever format I change the files to will be compatible wit the .mov files I'm using on the school's Mac.

How do I get past the "general error" message to import the files?

Any help would be greatly appreciated I need to be able to edit on both computers.

Thanks!

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.7)
