Unjailbreak Iphone: Error 1015

My iphone 3gs broke so I ordered a used one online and didn't realize that it was jailbroken. I've never had a jailbroken phone and have no interest in having one. So, when I got the phone I thought I'd just "erase all data" and restore the phone. Big Mistake. Now the phone won't boot and when I try to restore it I get a 1015 error. I just want a normal, unjailbroken 3gs. Is this possible? What do I do? I don't have any experience with this so if you have a suggestion, please spell it out thoroughly. Also, not sure if it makes a difference but the computer I'm trying to restore with is a mac.

Honestly? If you can return the phone & get your money back, that's what you should do. The terms of use of this forum do not permit posting instructions on how to attempt to fix this mess. You're gonna have to use Google and hope for the best. Good luck.

I should add, that depending on how this phone was jailbroken, you may NEVER be able to restore a stock iPhone firmware to it.

You can try DFU mode recovery, but it may not work. Many jailbroken phones get permanently bricked.

1. Update to latest iTunes and start.

2. Connect phone to a USB port on the computer itself

3. Press both home and sleep/wake buttons for exactly 10 seconds, then continue pressing the home button alone until iTunes sees the phone in Recovery Mode..

4. Follow the prompts to restore as new.

Definitely not?? How do you know that?

If not, why does Apple say this:

"Error 1015: This error is caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple."

you can use any ios firmware 3.5.3, 4.1, 4.3.5 to restore your iphone, when I bought mine a few days ago secondhand it had 3.5.3 and I didnt relise that itunes was going to chuck error 1015 and others at me when I updated it also stuck in recovery mode, for days and days I sat here trying and trying to fix a brick, then i finally got life back into my 3gs, i am now on 4.1 going to do update later and shall update you then !!! the stuff i backed up previously on itunes is now back on my phone and activated it via itunes.
