I know this is late to the game, but my 2g touch had exactly the same issue.  After the 4.2.1 update, the next time I used it (one or two days later) it would play no music whatsoever.  It would simply back out of the play screen to the playlist with no audio output.

With no warranty, in I delved...

I did not do any 'SHSH' blob backups etc.  I have never tinkered with an apple device like this (owner of 6 android devices, including two tabs)

I tried following a few guides online after trying numerous resets, wipes, restores, resets etc etc etc.  Tried the obvious to the time consuming.  Nothing worked.  Found a site 'iClarified'.  They had ipsw firmwares dating all the way back.  I chose the 2.2.1 download.  Using the button combination to get into restore mode, iTunes successfully accept and restored the touch with the 2.2.1 firmware (using shift+click on restore and choosing the 2.2.1 update).  The device booted up running the 2.2.1 firmware... and alas... it plays music again... I am very happy that my portible media player can play media again!!!!

Glad after all that my gamble payed off.

My ipod touch wouldn't play music as well as anything from 8tracks. I just reset it like what Mac Medic recommended in her post with the help of this site. Try it Shamar :)

Im having a similar problem. I downloaded/sync my music. My music played the first day but today, the second day, my music will not play and the music icon takes me to the itunes store and the itunes store icon takes me to apple store the videos icon takes me to the apple store almost every icon takes me to the apple store. I just want to play the music Ive already downloaded/sync for now; if I can do that, then I'll go to the APPLE STORE and buy something, but if i cant play the music why should I buy anything else from the 'i store'? This is my first apple purchase. I've reset everything and reloaded everything--no change. Just bought ipod touch yesturday.
