What plug-in do I need to install so i can import and edit .MXF video files in Final Cut. The suggestion of doing Log and Transfer doesn't work (the .MXF files are gray out not allowing me to select it.)

Usually digital files recorded on a camera to something like an sdhc card require the original folder structure to be intact.
MXF from what? P2 camera? Canon 305 or 105? Or from Avid?
From cameras, you need to use LOG AND TRANSFER...and with Panasonic and Canon, you need to load their drivers. But here's the workflow for most tapeless imports into FCP>

I have two suggestions:
AUNSOFT (http://www.aunsoft.com/video-converter-mac/) has a video converter which I have bought and used, and it works reasonably quickly and doesn't degrade the image (as far as I can tell, but I'm converting to ProRes 422).
Or: forget about final cut pro x and get Adobe Premiere CS 5 or 5.5, which natively ingests MXF files. Frankly I don't understand Apple's not including a codec to handle the MXF wrapper, but that's the way it is, and Canon doesn't have a converter either, or rather, they have one for the previous edition of FCP, but not this one.
Sorry, Wes, but I cannot trust that the application you recommend will work within the new FCPX environment. Their website says nothing about it:

Michael...no mention of FCP X was made in this thread. Nor is this the proper forum for FCP X, so why you bring it up is a mystery.

Try using log and transfer and then selecting the folder that came from the P2 card. Xmf will work with final cut pro 7

What you need is: Canon XF Plugin from Canon's website.
DJ's right, Canon has had a plug-in for a while now. And it works great with FCPX. But Adobe Premiere CS 5.5 or CS 6 will natively read most files without the need for externally obtained plug-ins.
MXF file format is not supported by Final Cut. It is a little hard to directly import MXF files to Final Cut. It will be better to choose a video converter to convert MXF to Final Cut. Hope it can be helpful. Good Luck. 😀
I just purchased UFUSoft Mac MXF converter for $29 to convert MXF to ProRes 422 MOV or H.264 MOV for Final Cut and it did the trick. Very simple, no headaches, no worries and no need for any unnecessary steps.
