Replace CD Bezel On Quicksilver

Sorry to clutter the forum with questions; I asked if anyone knew how to replace a front panel on a Quicksilver G4 but then I found this link to We Love Macs selling a CD Bezel (the part I need replaced) on its own. If they sell just that part, then presumably, I can detach and replace just that part. I just need to figure out how. (They don't offer instructions.)

So if anyone can figure out the secret (which seems very closely guarded, since I've been Googling non-stop) then I'd be grateful.

Thank you.

Hi-

You have to remove the front panel to install the blank.

There are 6 tabs holding the front panel to the case.

3 of the tabs are visible along the front edge of the tower case when the side door is opened.

The other 3 require that the optical drive assembly be removed.

If you pry (carefully) with a screwdriver and release the 3 that you can see, the front panel will swing away like a door, allowing the release of the other three tabs.

Are you interested in removing the blank/Zip bezel below the optical drive's door or the optical drive's hinged door/bezel? The former can be easily done by pressing its release tab (located just inside the chassis interior, close to the optical/Zip drives carrier) inward and straight toward the front of the chassis. Once it pops out, you'll need to unhook the left side to remove the bezel. Removing/installing the optical drive's door/bezel is more time consuming. It involves removal of the optical/Zip drive carrier from the interior of the computer, the case's plastic upper handle and lower foot, and then the front bezel. After that's removed, you'll see (4) screws on the outside of the chassis that secure the optical drive door shield to the chassis. Remove them and reach inside to pull the shield away. Back on the outside, you'll see (7) plastic pins that protude slightly through the metal chassis. Push them back inward until they're flush with the chassis (a short wooden 1/4" dia. dowel is good for this). With one hand, push the optical drive door toward the inside of the computer, and grasp it from inside the computer with the other hand. Installation of the replacement is the opposite of this procedure.

By the way, I'd check eBay for the part, as many sellers part out the case components. Although "We Love Macs Money" is selling a new service part, the $35.95 price tag (like all of their pricing) is too much. You can certainly find it for less, such as here at eBay. You might even check any Apple Service providers in your area, to see if one may still have it in stock. While many of the repair shops won't sell parts directly to the customer, a shop having one in inventory may sell it to you, because of its age and the lack of demand for it.

Forgive me for seeming stupid but I can't seem to get the front panel off because the door from the optical drive bezel is in the way, but that can't be removed until the front panel is off! Do I just brute-force rip it (since the door will technically fit through the slot?)

Thanks for the warning about WLM, but I'm not buying parts from them; actually I'm not buying parts at all. My Quicksilver came with a second broken-er Quicksilver whose case I'm cannibalizing for bezel so I got lucky.

EDIT: Never mind, the stupid pills wore off. I got the panel off; the bezel is ready for transplant.

I tried pliers, but the bolt is flush with the plastic. 😟

The local handyman is coming up to fix the faucets this morning; if anyone knows how to remove a rounded allen bolt, he will.

Also, your email is not available in your profile. (It's probably set to private by default.) Mine is allyls3829 (funky at sign) mypacks.net but I don't think it's in my profile either.

Thanks so much for your willingness to help but I puzzled it out from the less detailed instructions. Quicksilver booted post-surgery, its bezel is replaced (or, rather, its old bezel is repaired with a flat screwdriver to force the bar part to be more non-bent, thus circumventing the stuck allen bolt) and its optical drive opened which was the important thing since the broken bezel had been making the drive stuck inside. Thanks for your help though. And I saved you the effort of typing! 😀
