G3 Upgrade Problems to Panther

I just received an old Bondi Blue iMac from a friend. Since I had a copy of Pahther (my other mac is now on Tiger) I decided to clean off my friend's info and upgrade by doing a clean install of Panther on the old iMac.

Upon installation, Panther told me I needed to upgrade my firmware. I clicked OK, and it went to a blue screen and stayed there forever. After about an hour, I shut the machine down manually.

Since then, I cannot reboot - either normally or from CD. The start up sound chimes, but no light comes on the screen and no function from the keyboard or mouse (no lights, etc). I have to eject the start-up CD manually.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I've got a G5 tower that I use for my work, but I was hoping to use this for the kids internet and email machine.

Thanks.

It sounds like the firmware wasn't updated correctly.

I just ran into this problem recently...luckily I was able to fix it. Two things to remember:
Don't reset the PRAM
You have to be booted into OS9.1-9.2.2 from the hard drive for the firmware update to work.

And here's what apple has to say:
Install Firmware Before Mac OS X 10.2 or later
