See if you can force the phone into recovery mode:

Turn your phone off. If you cannot turn off your phone using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When your phone turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons. Then, leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

I tried what you suggested & it didn't work, so I tried shutting itunes down then turning it on again, & it appeared to be working. Then I got an error code 1604 saying that the iPhone couldn't be restored. This happens to me everytime I plug my phone into my computer to sync and update. I'll try it again & see what happens.

Error 1604 is a USB error. Make sure you're using a 2.0 port directly on your computer, no hubs, no keyboards. Try a different USB port. You can try this:

  1. Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
  2. Restore and wait for error 1604.
  3. When prompted, click OK.
  4. Close and re-open iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
  5. iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
  6. Try to restore again.
