Translating sheet music into Garageband

I have a section of sheet music, specifically the "Brownie Smile Song" that is "the" song for Brownie Troops. It is printed in one of the handbooks. I was thinking that I could go into GarageBand and somehow figure out the tune by plugging the notes into some sort of sheetmusic template. I don't know what the tune is so I was hoping by doing this "plug in" I could get itunes to play the tune so I could figure out how the song went. Anyone out there know how to do what I want? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alice

Find a musician who can read music and enter the notes into GarageBand for you.

Or, you could just find a Standard MIDI file of the Brownie Smile Song on the Internet, download it, and drag it into a blank GarageBand project. Problem solved.

Here's one:

I'm not sure what you expect this plugin to do. You can select a software instrument (preferably a piano) in GB, create a track, open the editor window and "write" the notes into it, corresponding to their lengths and pitches etc. But from your post I take it that you can't read notes, right? So how do you want to get the paper staff into your computer?

Christoph, I do not agree. Boy Scouts is an international movement started in England 100 years ago. Girl Scouts is an international movement started in the United States just a few years after Boy Scouts got started.

While it is true that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts is popular in the United States, it would be a mistake to characterize them as American traditions.

The World Scouting headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.

You can read about the Boy Scouts of Germany here:

http://www.scoutnet.de/info/

I was involved in the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts between the ages of 8 and 16, in Atlanta Georgia. Now I am 41; last year I was Scoutmaster of a troop composed entirely of Spanish-speaking boys from Central and South America.

Singing is an important Scout tradition. However this is usually a capella around a campfire at night and not in a studio with GarageBand loops.

Here are a few German Boy Scout songs:

Wir wollen zu Land ausfahren

G C G D7 G
Wir wollen zu Land ausfahren, wohl über die Fluren weit,
C D7 G D7 G
aufwärts zu den klaren Gipfeln der Einsamkeit.
C
Wollen lauschen, woher der Sturmwind braust,
G
wolln schauen, was hinter den Bergen haust
C
Und wie die Welt so weit
G D7 G
Und wie die Welt so weit.

Wow! I had no idea this little old topic would generate such a discussion of culture! I do appreciate the idea of downloading the song from the internet. I should have thought of that myself! I still underestimate the vast wealth of knowledge that is right at our fingertips. I was just thinking that there was maybe some blank sheet music that you could "type" the notes onto and then play back to hear the tune. I have the sheet music in my Brownie handbook, but you are right, I can't read music. Not anymore anyway. I used to play the piano and the flute when I was a teenager. But, as they say, use it or lose it. And I didn't use it. I do appreciate all the suggestions.
Thanks,
Alice

Well, Alice, I'm known around here for over-discussing a topic.

Anyway, yes, you can enter notes one at a time and construct music in GarageBand without being able to play a keyboard instrument. It's called "step time entry" and you can do it either in the MIDI "piano roll" mode or the standard music notation mode. There are many programs that can do this, not just GarageBand.

GarageBand comes with a PDF manual called "GarageBand GettingStarted.pdf" which you can access through the GarageBand Help menu. Chapter 9 in this manual is called "Working in Notation View". This explains how to enter notes in that manner.

Keep those Brownies singing!

You can't "Type" them, but there is a notation editor in GB, you use the mouse to insert notes on the staff.

However, as has been discussed, I would certainly try searching for a MIDI file online first before takling it myself.

Thanks for your offer. I finally fooled around with the program long enough to figure something out. I seem to remember a looooong time ago, when I had my first computer, a Mac SE30, that I could use the computer keyboard like a piano keyboard and I finally figured out how to do that. At the time, those many years ago - about 20 - I thought it was the neatest thing I had ever seen, along with being able to play little snippets of sound with my talking moose on the SE30. Does anyone remember him? You would type in the text and click a button or something with your cursor and the moose would say the phrase. I thought that was so funny. Boy! we've come a long way since then. I really appreciate everyone's helpful and generous spirit. This is a great forum!
