force 720p resolution

Hi

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini (I think) which is connected to a projector via way of my receiver and is used as a home theater . Every couple of times I turn the receiver on (the mini always stays on) the mini changes to the max resolution that the projector has (1080p). What I would like to do is just always stay at 720p - is there any why that I can do this - or is there perhaps a way to disable the automatic detection of the projector? I have tried to find a setting in the receiver but couldn't find anything!

Thank you for any help

Hi

Nope - sorry but thats not it 😟

The mac mini is ALLWAYS on i.e. I never shut if off and it never goes to sleep. In the mean time I am @ 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and am still having the problem. The mac seems to get the signal to change the resolution from the projector. This is perfect if I am using the machine "properly" and not headless ...

Thank you for taking the time to answer my (very old) question - hope you have air-conditioning where you are 🙂

When the Mac no longer gets a signal from the projector/monitor it will 'turn off' its video port. In this case the Mac is losing the signal from the projector when the AV Receiver is either turned off or switched to a different device to the Mac mini.

What you need to do is trick the Mac mini in to thinking the projector is always present, it will then not deactive the video port and will not reset the video settings. Back in the days of VGA connections you could make a custom plug which hardwired one of the pins to a signal to trick the computer however these days when using DVI or HDMI connections you need to get a purpose made device. The one I have used along with many other people is the Gefen HDMI Detective Plus (or if your using DVI still the equivalent which is the DVI Detective Plus).

With these the Gefen device learns the signal from the projector or monitor, thereafter even if the projector or monitor (or AV Receiver in the middle) is disconnected or turned off the Gefen device keeps sending the signal so the Mac thinks it is still connected and keeps the same video settings active.

HI John

thank you for your input. Athough this helps me understand the problem I feel that is a quite expensive solution at the moment. I also have an Apple TV that just keeps the set resolution (I assume that they do not detect the port). I was hoping for a software solution to the problem... There is a French guy who has software to save the settings and restore them based on the signal it is receiving - unfortunatly it did not work for me.

I was planning on replacing the Mini with the Apple TV ... just dont want to reencode all my movies to a format that the Apple TV understands 😟

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to answer my question - have a good day!

Thanking you in advance
