Scoring Oddity

I have two midi tracks, piano and bass. I have an arrange window open and within that, a notation window open as well. I am examining the bass part In the notation window, and click outside the staff and (normally) it would back up one level and display both bass and piano. Or I could use the up-arrow in the upper-left part of the notaation display. In either case the scoring area is then greyed out with the text "Nothing to display."

If I open another screen, a page-view of this piee I can back up and have both staffs display but not in my arrange window. I've done this a zillion times, but can't figure out why it won't work now. I opened a new project, pasted these two tracks into the new project and they display appropriately there.

What preferences or options would have to be toggled for it not to allow display of both (many!) tracks in scoring?

I've had something similar. I don't know if this will solve your problem, but I do two things: 1. I make sure that "all instruments" is chosen in the score set (because I find the score set VERY difficult to work with, and if you don't choose the right instruments, you won't see them in the score), and 2. In the window layout->global format, at the bottom, I check "Hide muted tracks". Then I unmute what want to see and mute everything else. After trying a few things, this seems to work well.

Excellent! Many thanks, Keystrike. I am working hard with scoring right now and fully intend to make it submit to my will! Something that hasn't occurred after a few years of use!

Incidentally I am working my way through Doug Zanger's excellent tutorial from groove3.com. Scads of inscrutables have become "scruted" in the past two weeks or so!

I still have real issues working with the Score Display of selected instruments .. and I have been using Logic for years.

FWIW - Logic 7 functionality with floating windows that were lockable were absolutely the best way of working. You could open any window and size it to any size and lock it (ie so that it would always remain on the front). It was also useful to have a Piano Roll floating window open and size really small to display

Logic 8 and Logic 9 have always been completely inferior in this respect and there seems no willingness to go back to the old system. And in fact I would love to be proved wrong if anyone can post a Screenshot of being able to do the above in L9.. 😉

Coming to your original question one thing that works for me is to make a Score Set of say your individual group of instruments ( in your case piano and bass) and then save it as a separate Screenset and Lock it. That way you can always call up reliably a view of the same instruments.
