no option for headphones on system preferences

Question

no option for headphones on system preferences

I am new to mac and I cannot find how to change sound output to headphones. I have reviewed system preferences and the only option showing is 'internal speakers'.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

when you plug in the headphones the audio output will automatic change to jack output

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am afraid this does not work as when headphones plugged in the sound is coming from the inbuilt speakers. I have checked the headphones and all is well.

That is correct. The option does not become available until you plug in the headphones. Then from System Preferences > Sound > Output you will be able to select your headphones as identified there. Well done.
