Q: iMac 12,2 (mid 2011) airport (wireless) problem

I bought this week an iMac Mid 2011.

I have done every update from " software update", but i have an issue with the wireless connection.

Sometime the wi-fi connection freezes and internet doesn't work (ping with router fails). To solve I have to disconnect airport and re-connect.

The router wireless works (i have 4 pc + 2  mac + iphone, and i have this problem only with this iMac). In windows (bootcamp) wireless works fine.

Yesterday, when i opened Network Utility, opening the airport interface (en1) I had a kernel panic (this happened 2-3 times). So I reinstalled MacOsX.

Today I have the same issue with the wi-fi, but when i open network utility i have not kernel panic.

Someone has this problem?!

Solutions? Next week I'll call apple support to see if this is a known problem

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

27" iMac, 2 weeks old. Add me to the list of users having internet connection issues on wake up. All connections are either extremely slow or timeout completely.

    Ok, iMac has returned home.

All I can gather from the Apple store guy was that they'd replaced the Airport card.

Apart from the batteries in my keyboard being dead (annoying) and the iMac being returned to it's original factory state (still working out Time Machine to get back to some state of how it was previously), the machine appears to be behaving itself (fingers crossed!!).

I don't know if I have any new updates installed, so if someone wants to tell me where to look, I can let you all know.

Thanks for the update. Not much information from the Apple Store, but that is about what I thought they would say.

No freeze ups on my iMac in 4+ days now.  Only major difference is that I'm running my Time Machine backups to a locally attached USB drive and not the Airdisk attached to my Airport Extreme.

I purchased a new 27" iMac Sunday and have been having the same wifi problems. It seems to go in and out and not reconnect after sleep or display sleep. It still shows as connected though with full bars

I am connected to an airport extreme with 802.11g.

Feel free to email me if you need any additional data or tests. It is a very frustrating bug.

I'll add mine to the list.  21.5" new iMac.  Have had it for 5 days.  WiFi connectivity issues just like those described in this thread since day one.

    - I'm not running Time Machine on it yet.

    - I have other devices connecting to WiFi with no problems.

Add mine to the list. VERY slow WiFi after sleep, and sometimes even after a fresh reboot.

I have brand new 27" imac and can't believe the wireless problems I am having - it keeps losing connection and I have to turn off airport and back on.

I have no problems on the iphones, ipads or PC's connected to my router.   Have tried changing channel, g mode only etc. but no difference

This problem seems to have been going on for years looking at these forums - come on Apple please fix it!

Hello, I have the EXACT same problem in AUS with my new 21.5 inch imac. Wireless drops out every 2-5 mins and need to toggle the airport on/off button to reconnect. Been on the telephone support for hours and was assigned a supervisor who knew nothing. He tried to do everything...reinstall mac OSX, DNS & channel changes have done nothing. He thinks its the router, however I refuse to believe it as my brother's Dell All in One works flawlessly. My router is compatible with Mac OSX according to Netcomm's website therefore there is no excuse! This is my first Mac I have bought and I'm extremely disappointed. Apple fix it ASAP! This is ludicrous.

OK this is now what I know.

Like everybody else here I had the same problems, I phoned the support line and was given a rubbish attempt to clear the problem but I have found that the following, while not a fantastic workaround, seems to work for my 27 inch imac just fine.

    1. Go into System Preferences and click energy saver.

    2. Move the slider that says computer sleep all the way over to Never.

    3. Restart the mac.

Job Done. I have found that I was having drop outs every 10-15 minutes after a mac sleep but now I have changed the setting to never I have had just 1 dropout in 4-5 days.

The only problem with this is that you will use more energy unless you switch it off, while away from the mac.  Lets hope a better fix is implemented with the next driver update.

I seem to have very brief dropouts throught the day that are self-correcting. I've had two of about 30 minutes that self-corrected, and one that required restart of the Airport Express. Some seem to be after sleep and others are just while using browser.

I changed the Airport channel and so far haven't had any more long dropouts. I've had the machine about 3 weeks.

Having the same problems.  The mid-2011 21.5" iMac is in the same office as two older iMacs and a MacBookPro, all of which have had no Airport/networking problems.

Same problems here, mid 2011 27" iMac i7 using Aiport Express N. Start up: Internet is fine, along with all other devices. Sleep > Wake: WiFi shows full connection but all internet connections freeze until a restart, yet all other devices still work.

Tried configuring my Airport Express to 5ghz only and that seemed to work for a few hours, though iPhone 4 only works on 2.4ghz...

Filed an issue with Apple and will update with any news/progress.

10.6.8 should fix our problem, apple have asked developers to focus their testing on AirPort. but who knows when it will be released.

    Eric,

When you notice your connection drops, can you still ping your wireless router ? Have 2 ping's one to your router and one to say google.com running. If the pings to your router don't drop, its your ISP's connection that has an issue.
