Q: iMac 12,2 (mid 2011) airport (wireless) problem

I bought this week an iMac Mid 2011.

I have done every update from " software update", but i have an issue with the wireless connection.

Sometime the wi-fi connection freezes and internet doesn't work (ping with router fails). To solve I have to disconnect airport and re-connect.

The router wireless works (i have 4 pc + 2  mac + iphone, and i have this problem only with this iMac). In windows (bootcamp) wireless works fine.

Yesterday, when i opened Network Utility, opening the airport interface (en1) I had a kernel panic (this happened 2-3 times). So I reinstalled MacOsX.

Today I have the same issue with the wi-fi, but when i open network utility i have not kernel panic.

Someone has this problem?!

Solutions? Next week I'll call apple support to see if this is a known problem

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Unfortunately I have a static ip with an ISP supplied router, I could probably change this the key type if I managed to find my router setup documentation, but Im not sure where they are. Ive got a feeling that this problem has nothing to do with routers or connection protocols/security and everything to do with dodgy drivers in snow leopard for the new wifi card.

How do we know apple is looking in to this?

I talked to a 2nd Level Call Agent in Germany and he sayd that Apple US (top level) is interested in more Details regarding this issue. So they are on it (i think). But of course it would be interesting if it is a hardware or just a software thing.

Thanks guys, you helped me fix my Macbook Pro!

It turns out, I only had to switch from WPA2 Personal to WPA Personal.

Thanks for the update hardbase & sander81. Same problem with my Mid 2011 iMac.

Do let us know if we are able to provide any info to the top level. I'm just in a dilemma whether to go back to my reseller or to the service center as its such a work hinderance to lug the heavy thing out of the office after getting it all setup. Hope an easy software update would solve it soon.

My AirPort connection froze again about 1 hour ago. Bumping this thread to keep it alive for other iMac owners and possibly Apple if they are reading these posts.

My appt. with Apple Store is not until Saturday

try changing your router to WPA-TKIP and see if this works..   Its only 802.11a and a less secure, but it did stablize my connection.

I'm waiting until Saturday and if I don't see something from apple that acknowledges a driver problem or something to say they are working on it them I'm taking it back to the store.  Seems a shame if it's a driver problem but I don't want to be lumbered with a faulty iMac either.

I wouldn't be so quick to return it.

I'm 90% sure it's just a software problem, my airport card in my new iMac was doing the same thing.

I say was... I turned it off for a few days and just had it directly plugged in. Now going back to wifi it works as it should.

I'm thinking that having my wifi off for a few days flushed some corrupted setting/driver out of my system.

Not all iMac owners are having the problem, an like me.. Mine fixed itself. (I hope it's permanent)

When my AirPort connect dropped today it was a bit different than in the past. This time the display brightness was up to about 90% (I had it around 15%) and Sys Prefs > Network > AirPort showed yellow "on but not connected."  I've never had the brightness jump like that before ... very strange.

The last time the AirPort connection froze, the status was green showing connected (but of course no network traffic would flow in our out).

I doubt there will be much more to report between now and when I take the iMac to the Apple Store on Saturday. I'll report back here as to the outcome. I'm hoping for good news ... I don't like the thought of having to return this beautiful machine for a full refund

Hopefully your machine won't fall into the repair 'black hole' that mine has.

Getting pretty fed up now that I've owned the machine for a week, but only had it in my possession for 2 days.

Yeah, I'm worried about them keeping it for a long time too. The first time it fails after I get it back from the Apple Store, it gets returned for a full refund.

I cant believe that there is no kind of acknowledgement about this problem.  There are also forum listings on other sites about this problem.  I am currently connected to the internet on my 27inch 2011 imac through windows (bootcamp - without any problems)!?  What is going on apple come on...
