New iPod touch battery levels fluctuates

My iPod touch 4G's been around for just a month, and over the last 2 weeks the battery level's been rather bizaare. I could watch the battery levels fluctuate above and below 20% (one moment its 20%, one moment its 15% then its up to 30% etc). But anyway, I've downloaded battery monitoring apps and they dont seem to be of much help. Also, I've noticed that my battery doesn't hold as much charge as it's used to (it used to hold a 100% charge after i unplugged it, then 97%, then 96%, but it now shows 95% right after charging.) *hope you get what i'm trying to say here*

I've tried doing charge cycles, draining the battey etc etc manually and via iBattery Pro, but it doesnt seem to be working. From what I've read, it boils down to either two causes: either I'm being paranoid here, or I should get a replacement.

So... should I get a replacement?

BTW my firmware was 4.2.1 then i upgraded to 4.3.2 then 4.3.3, but none of that seems to solve the problem.

Hello Guys

I am really tensed with the current situation with the iPod Touch 4G.1stly it drains battery very inconsistently.i.e it will be 70% approx(since no batt per) and then after 5 min it will be 55 with Wifi download.Again if i put it in sleep it will be back to 60%.

Also if i try to recalibrate the battery(ie drain the battery completely) the ipod will shut down and show the battery connect to pc symbol for 10 sec but then again after 30m sec it does turn on and i can use it for some time.Last night i was able to do this 25 times and then when finally it was unable to turn on i charged it for 10 sec and it did turn on with 30 percent battery.Strange.Can anyone help.I have done everything,Delete all apps.formatted 7 times in 1 week, disabled locations Servies, time zone etc but no good,I also set the ipod as new ipod touch. Is it that the ios 5.1 is affecting small number of users/ipod with this. And also when i took it to apple care they tested the Battery and they showed me that the Battery Test Passed. So they are unable to replace it.

Please help.

The only help you need is to be told not to be so tense.

Imagine if you run fast for five minutes. When you stop, you'll be out of breath and have to take time to recover before running again for three more minutes. Then you would need to stop again and catch your breath again. And so on, each time ruunning for a shorter time before you run out of puff.

It's the same with your battery. If you download something over Wi-Fi, you've asked the iPod to "run fast". Putting it to sleep is exactly the same as you stopping to catch your breath. And as for you test when the battery is already showing it has nothing left to offer... Of course that will happen, as it would if you kept on running when already exhausted.

Stop testing and get on with enjoying the music on your iPod, or whatever else you do with it. And don't stress tha battery by making it do more when the red battery symbol is showing. That's the time to re-charge the battery, not make it do more work!

By the way, using the large typeface that you've found, and your poor punctuation makes it very difficult to read and follow your post.

hmm makes sence.Sorry for the fonts and punctuations, appologies. But wjat i am trying to say that my friend also has an ipod but his doesnt happen the same as mine.Infact we both get almost same backup time but the issue comes that mine shows Battery Low message faster than him and i can use a lot of time with with the message.

Also what i am trying to say is that how come my battery can restart even though it shuts down.Never seen in any electronics device such.Any idea why.BTW thanks and its the 1st time i am into Apple Discussion Forum so a bit noob.

Well I have. And I've worked with batteries frequently throughout my life.

As for why your battery should drain faster than your friend's.... Perhaps he has the screen brightness set lower than you do on your iPod. Or there may be another reason. As I said previously, you need to enjoy your iPod for the reasons you bought it and stop "stressing" time about stuff that you don't fully understand.

Your iPod is just a month old, so you still have time to claim warranty. You have done plenty of tests and observations. I think you should bring it back to the store and inform them of your battery problem, and be confident when / if they question you, or if they try to put the blame on you (Apple store won't do this, but if you are elsewhere in the world, who knows), be calm and know that you already spent a lot of time testing and observing and testing again. Insist to them you are convinced that your unit has a faulty battery and have spent a lot of time trying to make sure it wasn't a fluke error.

I have never seen my iPod battery level fluctuate the way you described.

nerdatheart thanks a lot for ur comments.Ya they called me and told me that its a hardware problem. So they have replaced it..i described them whats going on.i also told them that its just one moth old and this is a case of faulty hardware.they accepted it and gonna give me a replacement in 4 days.i also showed them a video where it did start 5 times in mere 10 min.so they were also shocked to see such a case(even though the battery test passed).m happy now 🙂

sorry friend but thats not the case.nevermind they did replace my ipod with a new one.they tested and found that it was a hardware issue.and ya if i battery does restart 25 times even after total drainage of battery its no way normal.

And also if u pay a good amount of money ina device u expect to utilize it tothe level it is supposed to be.This is one of the reason why so many people got angry when they saw the poor battery backup of iPhone 4S..

Ya i went there and told them what the issue is all about. They do a test. This is how they do

They go to safari browser then will type diags://xxxxx(x are a set of 5 digit number that they will give.eg 61725) then a diagonostic data is being sent to their server. That service centre guy( we dont call it a genius store in India) logs in with his username PW and then checks. He checks with the same 5 digit number like xxxxx. There he can check every detail like maximum run time with single charge etc etc and then found that the test passed. But when they saw that my ipod did start 25 times even though the battery was down to zero they told that they will talk with apple engineers and will replace. It took 5 days for them to replace it.Now the new iPod is smooth and is the way it should be.also this means that when u guys go to store they might check with the same system (diags...) and it might pass but if u feel that ur battery is not upto the mark u should always opt for a replacement.

Thanks ;-)

Your not alone as I have a referb iPod Touch 32 4g over a year old and worked very well where it only needed to be charged once a week with iOS version 4.3. Since updateding to iOS v5.xx, the battery needs to be charged between two and five times a day. I have completely shut down all notifications, location services, uneeded software removed, limited video and audio, and screen brightness is tuned to 50% or less...and also Wifi is enabled as I need it. I also noticed with any program I run, the battery power goes from 100% to under 50% and near zero when a game is opened!!!! iOS v4.3 was a seriously better OS than v5.xx
