Can I change the pixel size?

Is there a way to change the pixel (resolution) size of a photo? Most basic photo editors allow this, however I have found no where within iPhoto which will allow me to resize an image.

iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.6.7), iPhoto11

Resolution is equal to number of pixels per inch. Unless you know the size of the print in inches you want to print there little you can do. For an 8 x 10 inch print at 300 dpi the image size will need to be 2400 x 3000 pixels.

With the advanced image editors the resolution is dynamic in relation to the number of pixels and/or the size of the print.

So you will need to know what the print size is before you can resize the photos' pixels to a specific DPI. You can learn more about dpi here: The Myth of DPI.

Just for another angle on why some of us are still tearing our hair out over this: Those of us dealing with sites like CD Baby are running into the Pixel Problem because it's part of their requirements, as below:

  • 1400 x 1400 pixels
  • JPG file type
  • 72 - 300dpi (300dpi is the best)
  • Less than 25mb
  • RGB color scheme (not CMYK)

Even if you are not having them press the disc, you still can't upload the artwork for screen display with downloads unless it's 1400x1400. System won't accept it. This means the "print size" of the artwork is meaningless.

You're question is actually ambiguous.

Yes you can change the pixel size in the export dialogue. Select a pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. Note under the Size drop down you can select a custom size.

However, is that what you want to do? You then mention "resolution" which usually means the dpi of the image.

Dpi has no meaning on a computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per", if you follow. Dpi only has relevance when you go to print. Here's how that works:

Your photo has a fixed number of pixels (multiply the length by breadth). Print those pixels at, say, 6 x 4 and you'll get a density (or dpi) of the total pixels/6, at 10x8 it'll be the total/10 and so on.

So, yes, you can set the dpi. You do it when you decide the dimensions you're going to print at.
