itunes will not recognise when the phone is plugged in too
Only just brought the phone. Tried to update, had error message the iphone oculd not be updated. An unknown error occured (1602). Did pull the USB out before i click ok.

Reset the iPhone by holding down the home and lock button for about 20sec. than connect it to itunes and check if it recognizes it.
I solved this problem trying conect the usb in another usb port.. in my pc...
the itunes not recognized the iphone only put your cable in another port..

when i plug it in after "reset" the USB and itunes logo come back

Exit iTunes and plug your iphone back in to see if itunes opens up
try with another cable or computer...
maybe the drivers canot be installed...

itunes didnt open, but my PC does make a sound to say something is connected

When it entered dfu mode a driver was installed

I once had that problem but it was because it had a sim card inserted the Redsnow detects your iphone?
maybe try to install the jailbreak to solve your problem that is independent of the Redsnow itunes and most likely is that if you catch it work ..
when youyou connect the iphone is the sound that was connected ? to connect to another USB port must reinstall the drivers
