That is how apple tv works. You connect it to your TV via an HDMI cable. You only stream through your mac if you want to use home-sharing for your iTunes library.

thank you i have two more questions please- i did that but nothing happens. do I need to change settings or do something the menu screen? the apple tv is connected via hdmi to my tv but tv showing "normal" shows - nothing about appletv showing up on the screen?
how do you turn off the appletv gadget - does it hurt to unplug it?

You have to switch to the input, it won't be on the same one as when you are watching cable. Look at your TV manual to see how to change the input
You don't turn off the apple tv, you can put it in standby. It uses very little energy so there really is no need to unplug.

Are you saying you can't see the Apple TV at all on your TV screen, have you switched your TV input to the HDMI port you are using for the Apple TV.
It won't do any harm to unplug the Apple TV occasionally, although it actually uses very little power in stand by mode.
