Safari wont download .rar files

Every time I try to download a .rar file, it gives me a whole load of plain text code, which i assume is the .rar file. How do I download it?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.3.9), 512MB ComboDrive

Hi Applesr4eva,

Try right-clicking/control-clicking on the download link and select 'Download Linked File'. It sounds like the webserver the file is on is not identifying the MIME type correctly. In these situations Safari will default to assuming it is text and display it as such.

Once you've downloaded it, scapesuiters directions above should help you unpack the file.

I've downloaded .rar files by control-clicking them but Safari appends a .txt to each file. As soon as I edit te file name to remove the txt suffex, the icon changes to a .rar that Stuffit can then decode. What I would like to do is have Safari download the file without appendinf the .tst to it. Any idea where you would make the appropriate adjustment in Safari?

Ctrl+Click works for me when i try to download .rar
But the problem is still here for files stored on sites like rapidshare webhosting, in which you have to enter a confirmation code and then click on a "download" button. In this case you're unable to use ctrl+click....

I LOVE Safari but i'm sad to say i had to download Camino just to download .rar files :(((((

What I do, when I download .rar files, I download them, I let mac append a .txt filename to it, and when I'm finished downloading all my .rar files, I select them all and I open workflow (by right clicking or Control+Left click - Automator - Create Workflow) and I choose the option rename finder items, I choose replace text, and I replace the ".rar.txt" for ".rar" that works fine for me, more work, but eh, Mac programs can't be perfect! (It's still better than windows, that's one thing! lol)

Hope that helps you out! But I wish there was an option on Safari to not append a .txt filename to certain files, that would make my downloading much easier, and it would make it more enjoyable! But eh, maybe Apple will soon 'fix' that 'bug' on Safari, who knows?
