How do I set the desktop wallpaper with an image in aperture 3?

you can't unless you and me are missing the feature:-)

aperture does not include an option allowing a particular picture to be set as desktop image.

I always export a selection of the pictures I want to use as desktop to my picture folder so I can select them via Preferences.

Let's hope Aperture 4 will bring that feature in ;-)

Go to System Preferences->Desktop & Screen Saver select Desktop. Both my iPhoto and Aperture libraries appear in the list:

Unless I'm totally misunderstanding what you want to do. You can even cycle through the images:

Must agree with Dale on this one.

With Lion, and after consolidated Iphoto with Apparture its impossible to add the apparture library to the screensaver option as you illustrate above. When trying to add with the + I can find the library but as with most changes you want to do to your OSx system its grey`ed out.

Another one of Apple`s fancy ideas or just a oversight?

This should be a nobrainer to fix ASAP.

If you're having troubles with setting the screen saver in Lion you should start a new thread.

System Preferences->Desktop & Screen Saver select Desktop

That also works in Lion, just like Frank Caggiano described for SL.

However, I had to repair the Aperture database to make it available in the Media Browser.

Thx LeoieDF, your answer set me off in the right direction. My problems came from a newbie error: assumption! I assumed that after making Aperture the main library, the other programs where given the same rights as iPhoto.

In order to see your Aperture library within your iLife and iWorks programs you must set this permission within Aperture3

In Aperture 3; preference -> preview you must assign "share previews with iLife and iWorks" = Always ( or alternatively to "when quiting Aperture)

Being a multi OS user I tend to forgett the different philosophies ( OSX, Linux, Microsoft, Android etc)

Hope this post helps others with the same issues.

Actually in Aperture 3 the key combo command 9 should make a desktop picture. Though it doesn't seem to be working in Lion??

Command(⌘)-9 is no longer listed in the list of default keyword shortcuts, and it has no effect. 😟

I wrote a little Automator service to bring the Command(⌘)-9 back.

A copy of this service is here for download:

This service uses three actions:

1. Aperture: Get selected images
2. Export Masters
3. Finder: Set the Desktop Picture

To install it, open the workflow in Automator and save it as service.

To use it, select any image in Aperture, then activate the service from the Aperture menu -> Services, and it will set the master of the selected image as Desktop picture.

If you like, you can assign the Command(⌘)-9 key to the service (in the System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts Panel) and then turn any image you selected into Desktop wallpaper by simply pressing (⌘)-9.

@Frank Caggiano, if you are still following this thread: for some reason this workflow succeeds with exporting the master, but I could not get it to work with the versions instead. Any ideas?

Caution: this service will clutter the Desktop with the exported images. If you want to avoid that, change the export action to export the image to a different folder.

Two things, one the URL for the workflow isn't clickable in the post, I was able to copy the workflow by cutting the URL and pasting into Safari.

On 10.6.8 the action Export Version works as expected so it may be a Lion thing or else it may be something in the workflow. If you create a workflow with Export Versions that fails on your machine I'll copy it over here and give it a try.

The error message I get is not very helpful: Export version failed, an error occured during export.

Anyway, the service would be much more efficient, if one would locate the preview in the Aperture library and use that, instead of exporting the version, but I did not have the time to try that yet ..

Well, works here in 10.6.8 so either its a Lion thing or somehting dodgy in your setup.

Make a new user account and try it from there, if you're interested in persuing this farther. MAybe another Lion user can give it a go and see what happems.

Not sure how mucg effort it would be worth to try and get at the preview in this case. It's not like this would be run so often or so much that just exporting the versionm (assuming it can work on Lion) would take up a hughe amount of system resourses.
